All,

In about 3 weeks I will be working with a client doing some parts therapy. I'm now reading Hypnosis for Inner Conflict Resolution. I'm interested in getting a handle on a model of a person's personality(mind) that will help me understand how(why) parts therapy works.

Do you apply a the parts process having faith that it will work? This faith being based on experience or readings.

Or do you apply the parts process because it works and fits with a model that you believe in?

I would really like to hear about  the models that support your work.

Thanks, Walt

So, if I understand Michael and Hugh correctly, all hypnosis techniques other than direct methods are using constructed symbolism, e.g. metaphor, rather than rational labels.

Walt,

Although this is just past the one year anniversary of you asking for this, I will provide my model of parts therapy (that I now refer to as simply a managers meeting)

The model goes like this:

For each and every individual behavior we have, there is a part of the mind that manages it.

These behaviors are the automatic reactions we have learned thorough our experiences.

There is a specific reason for each behavior, and each behavior has a specific purpose.

The managers operate in a manner similar to the upper management of a company, in this case, it is the company of YOU.

The ultimate goal of all these managers, just like all upper management, is the betterment of the company. i.e. the betterment of YOU.

Once a behavior has been established, communication to it is cut off and it becomes an automatic function that responds to specific triggers in the form of events or situations.

Over time, things change; we grow older, mature more, and our situations change with us.

However; the behaviors that were established in the past are still in full effect, and are unchanged from the time they were first learned.

A managers meeting allows us to directly communicate with the managers of these behaviors.

We, as hypnotists that facilitate these meetings, act as consultants...for the company of YOU.

Like real life business consultants...we cannot TELL the managers what to do.

But; we can suggest changes if we show supportive evidence that the current behavior is no longer beneficial to the person, and that the proposed behavior change will make their function beneficial to the person again.

I used to have names assigned to address them with and what not, but I found it wasn't necessary.

Now I just refer to them as "the part of (insert client name here) that is in charge of (insert behavior here).

Ask them if they will agree to the change for the reasons stated and benefits presented.

If they say they will, thank them for their loyal service and let them go back to work.

Have them give evidence of the change to the client, either by future pacing or a presented scenario.

That is pretty much it.

I presented a utilization of this model in my stop smoking intervention, and it works very well.

I have only had one person who did not want to use it, but only because it was not what Roy Hunter presented.

An interesting side note: These managers are aware of what is going on around them.

You can talk directly to them (and effect change) without any sort of formal hypnosis.

I have found that this comes in handy for some pain management techniques.

I hope it is understandable in the way that I said it

John
