I know this has been done to death in many aspects, but I am interested to know, what if.

What if, any suggestion to cease smoking brings out the bouncers, causes the individual to become charged emotionally, hypervigiliant,  ready to repel all and any suggestions to desist, much less stop, and it  causes a very rebellious part and defiant part to appear despite another part thinking how much more financially convenient it would be.  The rebellious part at every attempt to thwart any suggestion to desist or stop. increases the smoking habit.  How would you cool the defiance down,  the feeling of ownership, the feeling of fear of deprivation?

Add to this the fact the mother died from lung cancer which was put down to smoking, but this fact alone escalated the smoking habit with the client determined to disprove that smoking is what killed her.

Hi Suzan,

This is the client's account based on continual anti smoking advertisements, warnings by health practitioners about possible health issues later, Printed adverse material on cigarette packets etc. No parts or other therapy has been attempted. I am currently studying and parts therapy and ego states therapy are part of this, I am also reading Hypnosis for Inner Conflict Resolution. I am interested in how you might go about this.

Yosef,

I appreciate how gentle and respectful you are in your responses. I was already thinking that this forum is difficult because we do not know each other's backgrounds, experience etc. We are all here to learn and to help each other and I would assume that no one has bad intention.

It's also difficult to respond to a posting without knowing the original poster's background. Our friend who posted this question about the rather agressive smoking part may have been facilitating Parts Therapy for many years and hit a particularly challenging case or may be right out of class or may have read Roy's book with no classroom experience.
I would love to speak to the poster in person to see what actually transpired when the parts negotiated and where things broke down as far as the negotiations. We don't learn from the easy clients whose parts agree naturally; we learn from the difficult clients who present us with detours or may lead us into pitfalls.

I am grateful for this forum as I think that Parts Therapy done correctly is a valuable tool and I am grateful for eveyone who participates. We never know when we'll be at a conference and actually meet each other in person :)

Thank you Yosef for your thoughtfulness.
Sent you a private message.

Hello Leshem ~

I passed the website you referred to my friend who is a nutritional health specialist and metabolic typing master and her comment was as follows:

"I don't know what to say but I wouldn't be giving my clients any of these products unless I know their specific body. This hypnotherapist is taking a risk here."

I, too, am in the health and fitness field and by experience every bodies systems and histories are especially unique. We are never allowed to give perscriptions to our clients because it is out of our scope of what we do.

Food for thought.

Hypnosis goes very well with other natural healing methods to support the process

I just reviewed the original post as well as the responses to this thread, and I have several comments...

First, years ago I had a client with similar anger as described. Her two parts refused to come to terms of agreement because the rebellious part that smoked thwarted her every attempt to quit. The anger and criticisms went back and forth between the two parts in conflict, with raised voice and 4-letter words. I knew that she believed in a Higher Power, and called out her Higher Power part. Suddenly her voice sounded like a Goddess, who asked the smoking part to change its name to "Freedom" and stop being a slave to cigarettes. She also advised the two parts to accept each other and allow her the FREEDOM to smoke five or six cigarettes per day, with the freedom to quit at a later date if desired. After the session the client told me she felt more peaceful than in over a year, because she never considered "occasional smoking" as an option. Six months later she still smoked only 5 or 6 per day. This improved both her health and her finances.

Second, the constant ads bombarding people with the fear of getting cancer (or other dread diseases) make impressions in the subconscious. Because of the power of belief and imagination, it is my personal opinion that such constant bombarding of negative images might actually increase the risk of illness for smokers. This is why I oppose aversion therapy.

Also, one comment mentioned products. In Washington State a hypnotherapist could get into legal trouble for recommending any unnecessary products. Unless you are a QUALIFIED nutritional consultant or licensed physician, it is wise to avoid recommending ANY substance to help smokers quit. Thus, network marketing and hypnosis do not mix unless you keep your network marketing totally separate from your hypnotherapy clients.

wonderful knowledge Roy I wish we could fix u to come here and teach us your wisdom
In my country its ok and I was consider this web as an international web
and we do mix methods
but hypnosis totally not legal for non medical persons so we just say NLP to cover it up
I said it's only as recommended and the hypnotist can work with Chinese doc. or ND
And as I said that if I think my client can benefit from any help I won't think twice because it all about him not me
But we just shear info and many kind of people are communicate together here for fun and info
thanks again Roy I think you are wonderful mentor

Many thanks Roy, that was exactly the type of answer I was seeking.

Hello tc,

Thank you for your response. I'm glad you found my posting helpful. BTW, my own mother died of cancer that was caused by her smoking. In light of that, I hope you appreciate the significance of my helping SOME clients become moderate smokers rather than forcing them to quit totally.

Roy
