Walt,

I'll create that ("I must have gone into trance as I was reading your note") as a complement, and that it says something positive about the way I speak/write.

I'll also take another look at what I wrote, chances are I was not being clear (what I said was the response I got).

Michael,
I must have gone into trance as I was reading your note. Then I began typing, not having read the whole note.

I'm sorry. I don't like it when folks do that to me. :(

I'm re-reading a book called Finding Flow by Mihaly Csiksentmihalyi; he also wrote Flow. He does some science on what makes folks happy. Written about 15 years ago. I'm actually finding more flow in my life now. I haven't looked at much else that's recent.

Can I do this with hypnosis? Not yet. The best I've done is guided daydreaming while in a self induced trance.

If you have some current sources, please let me know.

Michael has a good point whats happiness for one is not for another, however the client would have an idea of what happy is for them, So I guess we would enhance that choice of happy.

I suppose this is where relaxation comes in. I love a good massage meself especially the Balanese 2 hours of pumelling mmmm...I can be quite headonistic :-) As hypnotists we can conjure up walks boat trips, holidays, just noticing or focusing on all the good things in life. To feel re-energised, rebalanced. A lot of possibility.

Michael,
I agree hypnosis is supposed to be positive. This is not about the other side of the dark side.
But....
Medicine and Psychology have focused on the "illness model" trying to cure folks of their dis-ease.
Much of hypnosis follows the same model. Cure folks of being over weight, smoking, anxious, phobias..... All good things to do.
Around 30 years ago some psychologists decided that there was more to curing what ails folks. From this grew the positive psychology movement.

Take a look at the link at upenn above. That will help you get a feel for what I'm after.

Not just cure, enhance. What does this mean and how do we do it?

A simple idea might be: How can we have fun with hypnosis? Can we offer this to clients? There's another group on HT with this focus.

An other example. If we have sore, tight muscles, we see a massage therapist. They can help us heal. However, folks go to a massage therapist just because it feels so damn good! What's the similar thing for hypnotists?

I have someone who comes to see me to work out some kinks in his life. Lately, he simply asks for something that feels good. He thinks this is a good use of his time and money.

Walt, Pattie,

.... Hypnosis is suppose to be all positive isn't it?

This is interesting... dealing with positive and negative.
Positive and Negative (as evaluations) do not have to have a basis in fact, they can have a basis in belief (I'm probably getting myself in trouble here). That is way (I believe) that "Posi-Psy." focuses on ...living meaningful and fulfilling lives... cultivating human qualities... and enhancing the human experiences of love, work, and play.

That opens the question(s):
What does a meaningful and fulfilling life look like?
How does one choose, and which, human qualities to cultivate?
What is love, work, and play?
Some of these questions may seem simple or obvious. But I think part of what Posi-Psy is about is looking for answers that are based in science.

Peter and Lorraine,
Nice idea!
And I think we may spend more time alone. Giving folks an experience of being around other people may also be good.

We're noticing more young folks on campus who are having difficulty with real personal interactions. Interacting one on one, face to face. I wonder what one could do here.

How about for Agoraphobia.
For some time now peole have experienced life indoors, enjoying the safety of enclosed surroundings, then there are times when people want to experience the expansion of their horizons, we can help you to gain this experience, and enjoy the feeling of expansion, and adventure of the outside world.

Pattie,
All healing is to be positive. But like the medical model many of our discussions begin with the perspective that our client has something that needs to be fixed. Much of psychology also focuses/focused on curing ills. If we look at most hypnosis sites and look at what they're about we'll see the same model. Fix what's wrong.

Let's assume that we're working with a trance partner and our goal is simply to enhance their life experiences. What do we do, what can we do? What experiences do we provide? What would you advertise?

From the Positive Psychology site: The Positive Psychology Center promotes research, training, education, and the dissemination of Positive Psychology. This field is founded on the belief that people want to lead meaningful and fulfilling lives, to cultivate what is best within themselves, and to enhance their experiences of love, work, and play.

What happens if we take this focus for hypnosis?
