One of the things I do initially with my clientele is determine the thing they want their lives to be about (e.g., lifelong learning? being a supportive and loving partner? exploration?). Then, in terms of hypnosis, we explore ways in which they may pursue this "value" in terms of reachable goals (enroll for a class, communciate effectively with a partner, visit the museum), and suggest that they engage in this behavior in a specific, measurable quantity (without worrying about results just yet) until the next session.

By helping the patient explore and engage in behaviors aligned with that which they want their lives to be about, we find that he or she develops considerably greater quality of life.

That's a really great approach, gearing toward someone's life theme.
Thanks, Robert!

It's part of a therapeutic approach...Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Once the client has their values determined, we can determine goals that are in line with those values and work toward them. The goal here isn't to avoid negative feelings and thoughts, but to accept them as part of life and then move forward along a chosen life value.
