I began working with a client who initially came to me because she wanted to overcome her fear of driving. At our first session, however, she decided to focus on her continuing challenges with keeping her home clean. Not only does her home evidence significant clutter and, for a lack of a better term, grime, she characterized her own tendencies as "hoarding." She admitted a profound difficulty in throwing things away. Through continued discussion, she revealed that she believes the state of her home allows her to avoid dealing with other internal issues, although she is not certain what those might be. Does anyone have any experience using hypnotherapy to treat hoarding tendencies? Or any suggestions regarding how to proceed? For our first session, I took her through a fairly basic self-esteem script and life coaching action steps activity. I have a sense that this particular case is complex and multi-layered, and may require more than one or two sessions. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hello Amanda,

I have encountered this several times: usually a client presents with an issue (often, the desire to reduce weight) and eventually a pronouncement of "hoarding" is given. I never use that term, it is the client herself who expresses it.

I agree with your perception that this type of case requires multiple sessions. In fact, I suggest you be cautious as hoarding may be categorized under obsessive compulsive disorders, which is beyond our scope of practice.

This being said, I am confident that a hypnotist can help a client organize their thoughts and possessions in such a way as to clear the path for a healthy life. I have taken the approach that as my client releases obstacles for a balanced life, those material items may also be released. It is my opinion that hoarding tendencies are symptomatic of core problems such as grief, abandonment, abuse, loss and failure ~ all of which can be faced and addressed via hypnotherapy.

Best wishes, Kelley

I agree with Kelley  as to be very careful of the terms you use in this case, medical ideologies must be referred out, that said self esteem and self confidence are a great place to start

Kelley, thank you for your insight!

Richard, thank you for your thoughts. I'm hoping to continue with self-esteem, and perhaps some work around failure, and see where that leads. Thank you!
