For those that are members of the NGH, there is a DVD available for rent called Safety On Stage, by Lee Darrow.  I just finished watching it and found it informative and helpful.  This may not be new knowledge to the seasoned veterans on here, but there is good, practical information on that DVD.

Hi Justin!
Thank you for the excellent advice!!! I hear every word you're saying, but it's too late for me, at this point, to cancel this show. I have been practicing, practicing, practicing, and I have a wonderful sound/video crew helping me out. A lot of the audience members will be my friends, and hypnosis colleagues. I've had a clinical practice for just about two years now, so I'm more familiar with the process than many of the people were that took the summer class in Vegas. I will review the safety course and get that insurance! Thank you so much for your input, you are a fabulous resource!

Hi Debbie, please do not take what I am going to say next personally. If you have a total of one weeks training in Jerry Valley's Course then the last thing you should be doing is a public show....

One of the main reasons we have had so many problems in recent years is that Amateur Hypnotists who want to be performers get very little training do to the cost and time commitment required and then get on a stage and choke possibly harming someone or blowing themselves out of the business because they failed badly.. In many cases they do not have a good repertoire of inductions and are not prepared for the variety of personalities found in a public setting. This not only leaves them frustrated however in the vast majority of cases leaves the venue closed to other hypnotists for many years...

There are Hundreds if not Thousands of venues we have approached over the years only to hear "Hypnosis doesn't work or We hired one once and they couldn't hypnotize anyone" All the result of poor or insufficient education.

Those of us who perform full time call those Hypnotists the "3 day wonders."

For anyone who is reading this here is some basics to look at if you want to perform publicly.

1. 150 hours minimum clinical training (NGH Standard)

2. Solid background in Comedy, Stage Performance, Choreography and Timing, Public Speaking, Emcee work, Improv. All or some of these make massive differences.

3. Additional training in Rapid and instant inductions.

4. Safety Training www.safeonstage.com

5.Liability insurance From Great Western / N.A.M.E. (If you want to be covered avoid Clowns of the US at all costs)

6. Practice Practice Practice. Join a local chapter of the NGH or other Hypnosis Group.

7. Get good at doing Demonstrations and do them for small groups and parties speak and demonstrate at rotary clubs and other organizations..

Video tape as many as possible and review to improve... Get comfortable hypnotizing small groups..

Notice I said get trained and prepared and Get Liability insurance BEFORE YOU ATTEMPT ANY PERFORMANCES.

Those are the steps that any burgeoning Stage Hypnotist should take prior to any paid public show that way even if they are not exceptionally talented they will not fail on stage and they will have the added assurance of being safe.

Since that is not the case I would go to www.safeonstage.com Take your safety course and get insured.. There is a massive amount of information in the course to prepare you and it is far more comprehensive than anything you took in Jerry's course. Safe On Stage will also show you the difference between insurance options.

From there Memorize your introduction, Pre talk and any suggestibility tests you may use. Have your music set up. (Know how it is to be cued and who is going to do it) (It is a nightmare to be brand new and get your music screwed up) Practice and memorize your script to invite volunteers on stage.
Make certain that you have your Pre talk for your volunteers down pat. and you have alternatives in place if you have a hard time getting people to volunteer.

EAT SLEEP AND BREATHE YOUR INDUCTION........

Time out all of your skits you have only so much time, most likely an hour. Plan 5 minutes prior to the end of show to wake your volunteers and REMOVE ALL SUGGESTIONS Make sure all volunteers are ok before releasing them.

Here is an Ideal timeline.

5 minutes Intro

5 minutes Getting volunteers

5 minutes Induction

40 minutes comedy skits

5 minutes to close
_______________________________________________________________

Here is what is normally seen.

10 minutes + Intro
10 Minutes Getting Volunteers
15 to 20 minute induction
15 minutes material
5 minutes close

_____________________________________________________________

Make sure all of your public shows are done with contracts in place and all shows are videotaped.

Thanks for the help everyone! I'm going to practice, practice, practice until the show date. As long as my voice doesn't quiver, no one will notice the nerves, right? Rusty, is your insurance company the one through NGH? I heard that they only renew in April, and that they don't prorate your fee. I hate to buy a whole year's insurance now, and have to pay again in April. I guess that's not the worst thing in my life, but, money is money, yes?

My insurance is through Performers of the U.S. There's some controversy about their mandatory safety course but it's not really that big a deal. Get insurance before you do the show.

Your second name is Taylor like mine so what could possibly go wrong? Whatever does go wrong be thankful, and immediately work it in as another key part of the show. Just so long as you keep going nobody knows it wasn't planned except you.
If anything really bad goes wrong that you cant recover from use the 1, 2, 3,

1. CONFESS
2. LAUGH
3. Keep Going 1, and 2, are interchangeable or do them together if you like just make it FUN!

You might also go into trance and rehearse by pre playing your show in your mind. Visualise yourself projecting your mind into the future to view yourself doing your show on the stage. Practice the perfect performance, then imagine yourself making a major gaff and looking at the audience with a big smile as you encourage them to laugh at you before you again pick up the pace of an amazing show that Wows them to bits.

Yes, this show is open to the public. I trained this past summer in Las Vegas with Jerry Valley, and had a great time! Jerry teaches the safety program as well, but thanks for the reminder to review it. I have not purchased the insurance yet. I know I need to. I also know I can get it via NGH. Are there other good places to get it?

I love the idea of seeing myself laughing on stage, that's a great help! Any other tips would be of great help!
