My doctor wants me to help with pre-adolescent children who are too big to "hold down" to administer shots. He has seen it applied very effectively and I need a script if anyone has one. Thank you in advance.

Hi Barbara,

in D. Corydon Hammond's big red book, (Handbook Of Hypnotic Suggestions And Metaphors) there is a section for children's issues, including one by Steven F. Bierman M.D. called 'Pediatric Wound Injection -- Using A Visual Distraction Technique'. There is a fair amount of information there. Otherwise, I usually tell kids about the 'Magic Numb Spot', that they can use, and put it wherever there's going to be a shot. If they forget where it goes, they can let the process of swabbing remind them what spot will magically have no feeling at all. I can testify that it works -- have used it myself.

Good luck!

Thank you so much, Patricia, I'd forgotten all about the 'magic numb spot'! And I'll read the big red book.

Barbara, I am late with my answer, but I also prefer the Magic Spot, I read it first in Dave Elmans "Hypnotherapy".
The other way is always funny for the child.
I use a reframe:
"This is not a shot! - It is an antiv-virus-update for Your body!"
Great idea, Erich! I appreciate the reframe. I'm sure my doc will be very pleased with the results.
Yes, the magic spot is really great!!! A physician has done it on our daughter....and it worked well, I did not know anything about hypnosis those days.

But later on I read about this technique in one of M.H. Ericksons work.

I just want to say....it works!! And the reframe is a great idea. Thanks for that.

Greetings

Andreas
I too have used the magic spot, With young children you can use a marker and draw a heart or something interesting. You can even swab the area with a little baby oil and tell them that you are rubbing in the magic so it will last. A word of warning,
do both arms because sometime they have to receive multiple injections and have to use both arms. Anchoring the pre injection swabbing to activate the magic is also a good idea.
