Guys,
I would appreciate feedback from hypnotherapists who have either used or are currently playing 'background music' to their clients while giving therapeutic suggestions. If so has it improved the therapeutic experience for the client? The reason I ask is that I'm thinking about using music via headphones to support clients' relaxation both mental and physical.
Any thoughts would as always be appreciated.

I think it adds a lot to the relaxation and the over all session, even if it used in parts. The music helps me as much as anything! Iv found the type of music used is very important, as the wrong piece can kill the mood. If you want something original and for a reasonable price Mark Hadley has made some fantastic stuff for me recently, his page is here:

Using music in the background is a wonderful tool to relax the subject further, also as it may "override" some subtle outside noises. I have a couple of CDs of soothing, calming music that I use, but found that a 7 Hz music CD I play relaxes the subjects particularly well. You could also ask your client to bring their favourite music along. But just beware - a teeny might perceive heavy metal as "relaxing"; so if you're not "in tune" (lol), this could be somewhat disturbing for you.
I'm not using headphones during the sessions; I feel they kind of "cut off" the communication channel of hearing between you and the subject. But that's my perception. I also think that headphones will be in the way and might become somewhat disturbing if you expect abreactions and/or the client moves around a lot which could result in the subject concentrating more on adjusting the position of the headphones than listening to your suggestions.
If you do have recorded the session and burned it on CD, it is a good idea for the subject to listen to it with headphones at home, though.
Btw, I stay away from CDs that involve water (sounds of the ocean, a waterfall, rain, etc) if it is a longer session. It might make the subject want to use the bathroom, lol.
Hope this is of help?
Namaste,
Ina
Permalink Reply by Jill Semonin PhD- CHt on December 5, 2011 at 7:04pm I used to think using music was a distraction to my voice, but then I found that there were already so many distractions (outside interference) that I started using music to block other outside noises. Then I found that it actually helped the client relax deeper. So, I do use some sort of noise background, whether it is a sound machine with just nature and birds chirping to ocean sounds, or sometimes I absolutely love using some type of metaphysical (angelical) sounds, pending what the session is about. I am all for it now.
That is my own experience as my clients tend to like it more so than without. (I have asked them).
Be Well~

I always use soft background music and also give the suggestion that any sounds, along with my voice helps them go deeper etc. Of course, always use music or recordings that do not have words. I also have a fountain in my office with soft water sounds (Sorry Ina, they seem to like the water sounds!?)
From my personal experience, before I became a hypnotherapist, I went to a hypnotherapist who used not only headphones but a blind fold AND she was located in another room!! I felt very cut off, bound up, and it seemed a little scary for me. Her inductions were recorded, then she did the script through use of a microphone, then a recorded ending - all through the ear phones. After 4 sessions I just quit - I felt it was very impersonal, had no idea what she was doing in the other room (other work?) and was very uncomfortable with the whole process.
In my opinion, music helps my clients relax and they love it. I just have it playing in the background and let them choose what volume level they would like me to set (some sense of control on their part).
