I will be seeing a 12 year old who wets the bed. I am looking for advice for anyone who has worked successfully with this. I am interested in both the approach and script ideas. I have done this before and used inner child work but would like a back up plan.

Thanks

Fern

Hi Fern,

Here is an article I wrote on the subject; it has some ideas for you!

I like to have the child draw a picture of themselves, before and after their "problem" is solved. I also draw a diagram showing how the body eliminates urine, with the interaction between bladder and brain included...

When coming up for the model for communication, let the child choose a character, animal or device. I've had kids assign mideval knights or blue bears named "Justin Bieber"!

Have fun,

Kelley

Kelly thanks for this article on bed wetting It's really helpful, with useful ideas. This is something I have not yet worked with and so will save your article for future reference. Thanks again.

HI Kelly,
I had a wonderful session with the young lady and she and I were both very optimistic...I drew the picture of how the body works and did the communication between the brain and the bladder but she did not have a dry night. I will see her again in 2 weeks and use your suggestions from the article. What has your experience been on how many sessions it may take and have you had success with many kids? Have there been some it has not worked on?

Thanks,

Fern

Hi Fern,

Sorry for the delay...

Just like with older folks, there is no prediction how things will take, whether change will be instant or gradual. I have found that any success builds belief and expectation, so it's important to have positive reinforcement when that happens.

I recall one 10 yr old who experienced dry beds for a week following a single session with me, but then reverted for a few days before getting back on track. Another teen gradually achieved success after 2 sessions until he got a new bed (in celebration) and he promptly wet it! It didn't take him long to back into the swing of dryness, though.

Teaching kids to master their lives is an awesome thing to be part of. I love showing them how to intentionally relax, focus, or simply play in their imagination. While most kids will eventually outgrow bedwetting, I know that we can help relieve this issue and let them enjoy their lives even more.

Remember that your belief is one of the best tools you can bring to this youngster!

Great article, Kelley.

Just a thought but one of the things I look for, if sneakily, is abuse in the child's home environment, especially sexual abuse.  I agree that physical causation has to be eliminated but I'd look (sneakily, like in seemingly open questions about things at home) for violence, abuse or fear.

in the book

Handbook of Hypnotic Suggestions and Metaphor (Hammond, 1990)page 490-491   great script with bladder brain discussion like part party-- for me it work great with 22 years women that nevet stoped having the problem with 1 session success

Yes, Yosef: getting the client to understand that a "conversation" occurs between the brain and bladder is essential. With younger clients, I start by having them imagine talking to a toe, a knee or a nose, etc. Once they grasp the concept, we move on to that discussion with the bladder and setting up controls in the kids' terms.

Susan, I use ideomotor finger signals to ascertain that the child is ready to move past the problem or if there are any emotional obstacles for doing so. I have yet to discover any signs of violence or abuse, but often, there are many deep feelings of shame, frustration and sadness, which is the real toll of this issue. Helping a kid release these and anchoring positive states is one of the true joys of my work with children.

Kelley, fantastic response. I just wait for your responses every time. Then log them for future use. So far I have learn t so much from you and I send my heart felt thanks.

Thank you, Janet and Yosef...I appreciate your kind words.

Another note on this subject: some of the medications used to "treat" enuresis have, as a side effect, constipation. Guess what is a side effect of constipation? You're right: bed wetting. If only docs would suggest hypnosis first!!

IHi Kelly, you have been so helpful, I wonder if you hAve ever worked with a client who had a nervous laugh? She wants to stop it as it is often inappropriate...any thoughts? Thanks, Fernr
