I will be seeing a 12 year old who wets the bed. I am looking for advice for anyone who has worked successfully with this. I am interested in both the approach and script ideas. I have done this before and used inner child work but would like a back up plan.

Thanks

Hi Fern,

Why don't you post this in the general discussion forum? I think it's a great question that many would like to comment on...

Hi Everybody,

Thanks for the great ideas in helping kids end bed wetting.  Here is the secret that I have added to the mix provided above.  Since enuresis is often the result of a sleep cycle problem, I have approached from this direction also.  I show the client a diagram or screen shot of brainwaves in a normal sleep cycle and explain what is going on.  Then show them a diagram of a sleep cycle that illustrates someone that goes right into a deep delta sleep all night and explain that as a result, the signal that the bladder gives the brain to pee can't wake them up, so the bladder just does it's job and releases.  The key is then in trance, I have them open their eyes and look at the same diagram and explain, and ask if the part in charge of the sleep pattern to help move the sleep cycle to be more like the normal cycle.  I suggest how wonderful it will be for the part in charge and the person to now have wonderful dreams at night, feel better all day long and wake up dry.

Hi Fern,

Here is an article I wrote on the subject; it has some ideas for you!

I like to have the child draw a picture of themselves, before and after their "problem" is solved. I also draw a diagram showing how the body eliminates urine, with the interaction between bladder and brain included...

When coming up for the model for communication, let the child choose a character, animal or device. I've had kids assign mideval knights or blue bears named "Justin Bieber"!

Have fun,

Kelley

Hi Kelley, I had a client last week with Cerebral Palsy (CP) - was referred to my by Matthew Walters for enuresis, he's in hes 20's and I have been using the brain and badder metaphor, plus I have build a great rapport which the the cause of his enuresis was not really much related to his illness but more related to wanting to be excepted and loved by his step father and his two teen sisters. I have learned that the young man is in spacial school and when his home hes been used for hard labor work ( cleaning up after demolishing buildings or construction related work, as well as feeling used as he was only paid $20 and felt that his step father was teasing him and making fun of him in front of his guy friends/ employees, and that was not all, he wanted his two sisters to except him and love him for he is, and not to be embarrassed by him, on top of that he was upset that his step father lived in America most of his life but didn't know any English, he felt step father was not wise and smart because he had no computer knowledge.

Long story short, the doctors I am working with did not support me in this case and insisted I recommend the young man to be on medication and only medication and the family did not want to consider medication until they did everything else before.

Day after tomorrow, I am seeing the young man again for reinforcement as well as hypnotizing his step father with a translator to be more caring and communicative with his step son.

This is what I have learned, as I have talked to everyone suggesting some changes, the son is no longer go's to work, his bed been dry daily since last Sunday, dad knows how to use basic computer now and everybody is excited.

So if anyone had worked with clients who have Cerebral Palsy (CP), I want to hear from you, I had few CP clients way back, the last one I worked with is a university graduate now and his condition was much more serious then this one.

Respectfully, Doreen Cohanim C.Ht,MM

Congratulations, Doreen, on helping this young man work past his difficulties. I think this is a good example of how important rapport with a client and his family is; you were obviously the perfect person to connect with them! Sometimes, I feel that when family matters are in disarray, the bladder feels like complaining. Thank goodness you were there to listen.

Best, Kelley

Thank you Kelley,

Yes Kelley, I agree, and I can't stress that enough, rapport, rapport, rapport.

I saw my client today for our second session, and I he shared with me that he had some accident and yes he did wet his bed, and he was a little shy about his wet nights, and I tolled him, wow this is a great news, and he looked at me confused, and I immediately continued, by saying back to him, wow... stating his name, I am so proud of you, you had three time dry bed, dry underwear and dry pajama, since you saw me, my god that must feel great, isn't it? and I paused... and he said ye, and I continued... so tell me how did you feel after that?

Apearntly he talked to his step dad aboput his feeling and him teazing him, step dad apoligised, but he end up going to work with him eventhough he didn't like to go, he said that he was not comfertable enough to ask for heigher pay or not to go to work with him at all, he also said this year he is going to collage full time so he want to be able to do well in school.

We did some role playing, I was the bladder and he was the brain and we created a system for him to pay attention to the signals before he wet his bed, I also gave him suggestion to not sleep so deeply, and if he did, hes bladder will give him stronger signals to wake him up, we rehearse it before and during hypnosis and I gave him a personalized mp3 to listen to at bed time.

I also ended the session, with good luck, you don't need to come back again, now you can use the audio, and you come back only if you had a wet night, I also explained how his brain works, and had him write his experience on a paper and sign it. This is what he wrote exactly: "I did not pee in my bed for 3 days, it felt great not to wet the bed because now I can focus on more important things."   He signed it and even put today's date.

I got three referrals from clients Mother, and all of them are far away, they travel 100 miles to see me, usually they come to me by referrals, this one was 75 miles.

By the way, step dad didn't come, and I didn't even ask... luckily i was busy....

here is what I get daily after my session with my clients:

Hi Doreen,
I just wanted to thank you one more time for the session yesterday. It was a really positive experience and I feel a sense of clarity that I haven't felt in a long time, possibly ever. I don't know if you work Saturdays, and I know this is very short notice, but my wife, ~~~, is taking a trip, and she was curious if you have any openings after 10am tomorrow for  her to do a session for her fear of flying? looking forward to our next session. Do you do corporate training and how much do you charge?
Have a great weekend!
Marc

I am telling you, when I get emails like this, I feel excited, their success makes me fulfilled.
