Hypnosis is being increasingly used in sports settings, and the positive publicity surrounding it is gaining increasing attention. In the last few months alone, various media have reported on gold medal winners from the Beijing Olympics using hypnosis to overcome problems in their performance, and an increasing amount of research is being conducted in this area.

This group is about learning more about the use of hypnosis in sport, and to exchange thoughts and ideas. I hope you find it useful!

Gary

Hi Mike and Karen.. I am knee deep in Sports hypnosis at the moment as I have been heavily involved with Canada's Gold medal winning baseball team. I am also working with some University contacts to develop and market a concept we call Visual Acuity glasses. I am happy to see some new blood bringing more interest into this group. Keep in touch.

Hi all- It is nice to find this place. As a way of introduction my name is Mike. I've been a Sport Psychology Consultant for over 3 decades. I use hypnosis with athletes. If you are inclined check out my blog at www.MikeMargolies.com  Over the next few weeks I will likely be posting a good deal on hypnosis and guided imagery. My most recent post was on relaxation training. I published a book this summer called The Athlete within You. I'm happy to me everyone.

Does anyone know of a hypnotherapist in Madrid that specializes in or knows sports hypnosis?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This is interesting and is making me think more in-pepth.  Brian you asked why is self-confidnece  important.  I like your definitions and where you put captial letters.

First I believe for an athlete to have trust to perform a certain action they need to also understand more of how their brain functions in relation to their bodies.  Most of them are so highly trained with their body and no "mental training."  How they talk to themselves but understand the mental functioning - why certain words work with the body and transmissions from the brain to the body especially at the upper levels of performance.

What builds confidence is discipline, repetition, and curiosity of how to be better. But then the self value starts to come in - for example with a figure skater-he was having problems with his mother and his worth was sinking which influenced his performance.  He had trust in his abilities to perform but there was a part of him holding onto a poorer performance.  That is where it starts to get tough.

I am learning from this for MYSELF and for others.  BTW PhD has several menaings one is piled higher and deeper.  It just means we all keep learning.

Chipping in another POV, I'd say that self esteem (perhaps relating more to the businessman's perspective) is merely an estimate (of worth) whereby self confidence (the athlete's point of view) is based on complete trust which is needed to excel.

Thanks Ahden,

Simply stated

Self Confidence - MY belief and trust in MYSELF to perform a certain action or task.

Self-Esteem - The value and worth I have for MYSELF.

But, for me,  it goes much further than that. let's take the self-confidence part. OK. I dont know if you agree with my definition. But whatever yours is, the next question is WHY do we need it when performing ?

Obvious question. It took me a while to answer. But when I did - I got a LOAD of insight.

So, Ahden. What do you think? Why do we need self-confidence?

I am not testing you. Why would I do that to a PhD :-)

Just interested in your take on this.

many thanks for joining the discussion.

cheers

My training with athletes in the past was more helping them understand the connection between the mind and the body and how to bring in the mind as part of the training.  They were professional and Olympic and not many had ever had "training" in the mental aspects.  Maybe a coach would "say" this is a mental game, etc. but no real "mental training."

How are you defining self-confidence and self-esteem?  Interesting!

I whole-heartedly agree that athletes are a special type, everyone always was open to trying what would help - different than working with executives.  The athlete would try it, come back and we would refine it or change it, an executive would have more of the attitude of prove it to me first then maybe I'll try it.

Thanks Kelley and Brian for the great replies.

I also worked along those lines and still do.

What I have also experienced is that athletes and coaches are not really sure what self-confidence is, what the difference is between self-confidence and self-esteem, and more especially why they need self-confidence. All coaches and athletes take it as a given that they need self-confidence. Very few seem to understand why.

So I have also in the last couple of years begun to help both athletes and coaches really grasp what self-confidence is all about. What we then experience is that they do start to become their own mental trainers, and really start to use the various techniques we teach them to even greater effect.

And you hit the nail on the head, Randy. They are dedicated and motivated.

I love the way athletes throw themselves into the arena and challenge themselves to get better each day.

We could all learn a lot from them :-)

Thanks for the replies.

I have started a new website for sport recently too.

once again thanks for the replies.

have fun !

Randy Shaw Comment by Randy Shaw on April 1, 2011 at 5:38pm

Great work Kelley!

I missed Brian's post, so..  I help the athlete clear all the negative feelings that show up in regard to the sport and competition, then regress into the roots, clear those experiences of negative feelings, help the client learn how to create superior responses, then future pace.  The future pacing is also a test to make sure we cleared out all the past emotional baggage, then I lead in the session, and then teach the athlete how to do "guided imagery" of success in their sport or event.  It's very fun as athletes are some of my most positive, dedicated and motivated clients. I get a lot of thank you's from moms :-)

By teaching how to clear any negative feeling and "imagine" success scenarios - before the battle-  I'm "mentally training" but would not have called it that.  It empowers them for all aspects of life, not just sports.
