I have done clinical hypnosis many times. I am looking for suggestions to help a client that is running a marathon at the end of the month. I asked what his issue is and he said he did not have any but wanted to do well with the preparation and the marathon itself. Any suggestions would be great. I am going to teach him self hypnosis also along with working with him to help with work outs and the race itself. He also mentioned that he gets nervious a couple days before a race and cannot sleep so I will also address that.

I have worked with elite athletes using hypnosis and strength training since I was hypnotised with the Aussie Olympic team Give him buffers against stress, one good one is to see competition as any other practice, visualise practise and associate those feelings with the excitement of running per se, he does itg because he enjoys it. Then reinforce with something to disassociate him from stress, lie he was watching it on TV for instance and not taking on the emotions of a stressful situation. Most of all he does it because he loves doing it! simple..Regards

Just a note to add to Art's good advice Bruce. I have worked with a number of marathon runners over the years and I believe it is most important for them to visualize themselves running the complete race. They have to have a mental game plan for each stage of the race and rehearse it in their head. Discuss their strategy, break it down into sections then coach them around the course while in hypnosis, record it to CD if you can and get them to listen to it as part of their training sessions. They have to develop a clear mental blueprint for the race then trust themselves to implement it on the day. I have a a good inspirational quote that I constantly remind them of. It may be useful for you. it comes from Stu Mittleman, World Record Holder for Ultra-Distance running ."I never ran 1000 miles. I could never have done that. I ran one mile 1000 times."

And as you, hear the sound of your feet, making a connection with ... that pavement
You can ... allow yourself to see
That feeling of ... "confidence, control and total relaxation." > (use the clients trance words here)
and any time you feel discomfort you embrace it. You step right into it and welcome it. You use discomfort as fuel to propel you forward!

Not only embrace it ... "anchor it"

As you ... "run those thoughts through your mind"
Breathing in ... "clean air"
Breathing out ... "all negativity"

Enjoy/Sleep
