Hi everybody,

I am immersed in learning as much as possible about the athlete mind so I can do my best to help them.  For those of you seasoned sports hypnotists, what would you say are the 5 or so most common reasons athletes pursue hypnosis -e.g. mental blocks with training, finishing the race, etc etc.

This information would be a great help!

Thank you,

Lynne

Hello Lynne,

Here are typical ways that hypnosis and NLP can be used for athletic performance:

    * Imagery training including mental rehearsal for increased and more effective performance

    * Increasing focus/concentration; being able to step into the "Zone" and eliminate outside distraction

    * Nutrition/weight management

    * Relaxation training/eliminating performance anxiety and boosting confidence

    * Improving interpersonal skills with team mates, coaches, and neglected spouses, etc.

    * Motivational strategies for exercise, practice

    * Competitive pressure management

    * Dealing with pain and injuries

    * Approaches to cope with retirement from sport

    * Restoring the "Fun Factor" to sports involvements

I recently was the guest speaker on Dan Cleary's Transformation-All Star Team Conference Series and enjoyed a great discussion on this topic with experts such as Dan, Michael Ellner and Alan Barsky, among others. One of the points made was to facilitate your entry into this arena, focus on the sports that you most enjoy yourself. This work becomes easy and fun when you are engaged with your sports client as a matter of play!

The general opinion, however, is that an effective hypnotist can help any athlete, without prior knowledge or experience of the particular sport because the client will bring you everything you need!

Best wishes,

Kelley

Kelley, how true this is, that is your bottom line: "Focus on the sports that you most enjoy yourself." It makes a world of difference.

In terms of themes, Lynne, I focus on:

Fun, Enjoyment and Pleasure

Health Benefits

Increased Stamina, Vitality and Youthfulness

High Performance Abilities*

*Note: I am less the competitive type and more the sports enthusiast, even though I have inspired, motivated and enhanced the talents of competitive athletes in football, tennis and golf. And I can also add surfing! ;-)

Hi Lynne,

I don't stress hypnosis so much in my advertising so I am not so sure whether they come looking for my services only for hypnosis.

but here are my 5 top reasons athletes need help with.

In most cases this is not what they present as the problem.

1) Negative inner dialogue  (consequence of poor self-confidence)

2) Competition nerves        (consequence of poor self-confidence)

3) Lack of routines             (Pre competition, pre-game and pre-shot)

4) Uncontrollable frustration many times leading to anger

5) Lack of concentration

The No.1 reason why athletes come is

Because the coach or my parents say I need help !!!!!

One of the major areas where we need to get involved - coaches and athletes parents !

It is in all these areas above that hypnosis can help wonderfully, but it is not enough. We need, I believe, to be offering a more rounded service that encompasses teaching athletes, coaches and parents  all about self-confidence - how to get it and how to keep it !

I also totally agree with Kelley again. Knowledge of a particular sport is not essential, but it really helps rapport with the athlete if you learn more and more between sessions !

And the Fun aspect - ESSENTIAL !

cheers

brian

Thanks to all of you - this is very helpful information!
