Sometimes, it seems we have only a limited opportunity to help someone. For example, I met with a woman this week for a pain relief session. She is mid-40's, a wife, mother and school teacher. About 7 years ago, she started experiencing migraines. A year and a half ago, a dental procedure resulted in nerve damage which has resulted in chronic pain. Three months ago she engaged in a medical attempt of nerve ablation to reduce the pain. To date, her life is overwhelmed with her pain suffering.

She relunctantly agreed to see me, prompted by a referral from a family member I helped. She was sceptical but said she was desperate and willing to "try" hypnosis. I think she was surprised when I didn't actually "use" hypnosis during most of the session, instead building rapport, educating her about her pain experience and demonstrating her in a waking state how she could change the way that she feels. She did enjoy a bit of healing trance work wherein she felt relaxed, although her jaw retained a tremor of nervous vibration.

She was rather quiet and withholding, which is an unusual event for me; I am adept at triggering great conversation normally. I sensed a reservation and unwillingness to disclose what is at the heart of her pain. She did state that she felt better and booked another session within a week.

I suggested to her that, in addition to helping her reduce her pain awareness while her injuries are healing, it might be beneficial to seek out the source of her migraines since they started spontaneously during a stressful time in her life. She was non-commital in response.

My question to you: Belief and expectation are required at some point in order for our work to help a client. How might I solicite these without alienating this client? She is so reserved and cautious and I suspect she has some secondary gain for her pain.

Thank you for your input.

Kelly,
First I'd show her how you can reduce her pain awareness while her injuries are healing. In that, you'll build the belief that you can help her with her foremost problem, pain. In a follow up session she'll develop the expectation that you can do more as you teach her how to reduce the pain or even eliminate it. Her pain has had power over her. You'll give her power over her pain.

Now you may be able to move on to other things. She heard you say that it might be beneficial to seek out the source of her migraines. She won't forget that. She may develop new beliefs and expectations.

Thank you for your thoughtful response, Walt. I made a follow up call to see how she is doing and her pain experience is already changing! Looking forward to our next session...

Kelly,
That's good news. I look forward to hearing how it goes.
I hope to work with seniors who are experiencing pain. I wonder if working with them will be different.
I'll visit the local pain clinic next week and see if I can work with them.

That's a great project, Walt. I suggest you tap into Michael Ellner's wisdom to prepare yourself for helping the seniors. He's a true expert with a generous nature...
