I think it depends on your client. I don't use it on those who are nervous or jittery, I did that once and she would not relax. As a rule I use progressive relaxation certainly on first sessions, ( I think I like to relax with it too ;-) )on a second session I may offer a quick induction usually the 8 word and deepen. Dave Elman is more gentle for a quick-ish induction. At the end of the day it depends on rapport and if it feels right to use it or you feel comfortable using them.

I have found that many of my clients have been exposed to trauma in the past and the abruptness of instant inductions has the posibility of causing added distress. For my purposes, a rapid (3 minute) induction is more comfortable and does not nagtively impact the amount of time we spend in hypnosis sessions.
As an example, I had a client that was in a hurry, so I used an instant induction. The induction was so abrupt, that though she had an effective session, she came out with the distinct impression that I had struck her! Something that I would obviously never do, and by her next session she felt reassured that it wasn't the case. But the point is that for an extra 3 minutes, it just isn't worth it for clients in my practice. I still use instant inductions for fun at parties, or with clients I have anchored a reinduction phrase with previously. But as a general rule, & particularly for first time clients, I avoid using them.

I was a relaxation induction man until recently and i attended a rapid, quick and instant indusction course, I have been using this type of induction with my clients since then with great success. A lot of the clients i find in my own experience want a bit of wow factor and it plays with their expectations to a degree. I am not strictly this though and will obviously adapt if neccessary.
If a client seems particularly nervous then I will use the arm levitation or the 1 to 20 count. these work fantastic and the 1 to 20 is my favourite induction of all along with the iron finger !!!!
