So we're all on the same page here, I thought a general description of some kind would be worthwhile as a guide post.
Some years back and hypnosis conference in New Jersey, there were several hypnotists whom delineated very clearly, from their many years of experience their view Rapid versus Instant Inductions.
At the time, they considered the Rapid Induction something under five minutes.
An Instant Induction was considered something less than three minutes.
To kick things up a notch, from my point of view, the Speed-Trance induction should take less than five to six seconds. When you get really good as Speed-Trance induction, you may be working in fractions of a second on various people. If you are working longer than that, you're probably working too hard.
So to recap:
Rapid = five minutes or less.
Instant = three minutes or less.
Speed-Trance = less than five or six seconds.

Brian,
You're a clever man!

I agree, typically Instant would be 30 secs or less for final setups and then pop 'em in five seconds or less. Instant does mean instantaneous but NO ONE outside of marketing actually does an induction with no pre-talk or other setup in that amount of time as the pre-talk and setup of context and gaining consent and all that is actually part of the process. At least, I've never witnessed one that was successful (I have seen a few failures but the "victim" was always pissed off at the thing as such a thing is an invasive and non-consensual attack, that is with no pre-talk or setup). Idjits trying to mimic a handshake attack induction on strangers are more likely to be culprits here.

If the pre-talk is done and consent given and the gool ol' hypnotic contract established then an instant induction would fairly be anything that is instantaneous (one second or less) but it's also fair to give it leeway to fifteen or so seconds or less.

Naturally, just getting consent and having 'em excited about being hypnotized is two-thirds of the battle anyway.

All the best,
Brian

Chris, If you can say the word instant faster than you can say the word instantaneous then you've speeded something up. Abbreviation! You can buy a microwave bed and get a night's sleep in three minutes. There's a little bit more to all and it is down to perception.

"A microwave bed" haaahahaha! Brilliant.

I've only been practicing hypnosis for nine months and have neither experienced nor induced anyone rapidly, but it's time. Doing a workshop tomorrow and one of the other attendees has accumulated lots of experience and training doing "Shock Inductions." I plan on asking him to put me under with a couple of his techniques, since I need to see how something feels before I'll do it on a client - or prospective client.

And I have noticed how necessary it is to set up the agreement.
Really enjoying reading all your comments!
Best,
Cole

Here are my thoughts: In the U.S., a referral would certainly be the way to go, IF the client was being seen by a medical doctor for the problem. If not, you could certainly SUGGEST the client go and then get the referral, but after all, the client…
