Tree drawing interpretation is fascinating. I have attended Dr. Janet Crain's workshop at NGH on Tree Drawing, taken the video training offered by Steven Freitag and acquired through inter-library loan the book "Draw Me A Tree" by Ethel Johnson (now out of print). This group will be attractive to those using tree-drawing now, and those interested in learning more about it. I have found it to be a great rapport building tool, and helpful in my hypnotic work with clients.

As this group builds interest in Tree Drawing, please post scanned drawings of trees by your clients and share your insights. As folks post their trees, those who are familiar with tree-drawing are invited to post their interpretations. PLEASE keep all comments positive. The idea is to add to the discussion and knowledge base rather than to challenge another's interpretation. Take this as an opportunity to grow as a professional.

If you post your own tree, before doing so, decide whether to use pencil, ink pen, or crayons/colored pencils. Then, close your eyes and begin to picture "your tree". That is different from picturing "a tree". If it appears in "your tree" then draw it to the best of your ability. Not all are artistically equal, so do this just for fun. I believe it is important to draw your tree before learning too much about tree drawing interpretation. So, as you are welcomed to this group, please begin by Drawing a Tree!

Hi Lee,
I am very interested in art interpretation as a therapeutic approach, but have never heard of "tree drawing". Coincidentally, I drew this tree a couple of days ago (I doodle rather regularly)... I'm curious as to your interpretation. I hope to learn from it and others' postings here!
Thanks! Kelley

That is a lovely tree. I would like you to do something for me, please. I would like you to close your eyes, take a deep breath, and ask your subconscious mind to show you "your tree", It may be similar to this one, or it may be radically different. The essential thing is, the intention as you draw it. Ask your subconscious for the tree, and draw it as well as you can.

Thank you, Lee. Attached is the tree that I see. Note that my mental image of it includes color, specifically, that the leaves are in various hues of autumn colors, reds, yellow, oranges, etc. I like this tree.

We were asked to draw a tree that represented ourselves in a humanistic psychology group. It is such a wonderful tool for both self discovery and to represent what we would wish for in our future selves such as strength, fruitfulness and being flexible like a willow. As a spiritual artist I find trees are one of the several images from nature that represent and subtly speak to us, they like ourselves being a bridge or conduit between heaven and earth.

It would be lovely to know more of the native wisdom around calling them ' The Standing People '.

Thank you for starting such an interesting group Lee.

I took a psychic development class in '85. The first exercise we did was to show that each of us had psychic ability. We each drew a tree. The instructor collected them, then handed them out, making sure we didn't get our own tree. We were asked to describe the tree physically, emotionally, etc... It was amazing how each tree's description so accurately described the person who drew it.
