The tree submitted by your client is quite fascinating to me. I see someone who is quite analytical and uses their head a lot. This could possibly be the cause of stress. Do you know what the white dot/ area represents at the beginning of branches in trunk area? This person is hopeful of the future (sun) and is moving there quickly. A nice solid trunk in tree. Perhaps client would benefit from self nourishment, self esteem, visualising a lush and fruitful future.

What are your thoughts? And others?

Thanks Lee for starting this group. My husband and I regularly use tree drawing with our clients, especially children. Looking forward to seeing the trees ;-)

When you say "more art than science" Vince, I think you are nailing the essence of what we who help others are doing. Indeed, not only is psychiatry more art than science, but in many ways medicine suffers when the "art is lost in the science". Are there universal truths about tree interpretation? What a good question. There seem to be some. They type of tree drawn seems significant. Whether the tree fills the page. Whether the tree is rooted or in the air. As the different folks post trees and we discuss them, you will see some solid ideas emerge.

I've done a bit of reading on the interpretation of tree drawings, and it seems to me to be very subjective, generally, as any psychiatrist will be likely to interpret tree drawings differently than another, given the school of thought that the psychiatrist follows, be it Freud, Jung, Adler or someone else. Is there anything objective about these interpretations? I mean, anything that everyone, generally speaking, agrees on? Or is it more art than science?(that wouldn't invalidate it's usefulness as a therapeutic tool, as I think psychiatry in general is more of an art than a science, dealing as it does with individuals who are each unique.)
