Hi Barry, I was with you right up to the point where you said the below... In the UK, there is no drug company heavy boys conspiracy. The ABPI has recently responded to doctors' concerns about freebies from pharmaceutical companies influencing…

Hi Barry, GPs only get a sum of money if the patient gives up smoking: it used to be £5 if at the 4-week mark, the patient wasn't smoking. Since then, the money's got less and the criteria for success have got harder. (Which is why…

Has he got a limiting belief in that he calls what's happening 'luck'? Believing in fate is one way of abdicating from responsibility. Testing the boundaries and pushing them until something goes wrong big style is one way of self…

The person who has the affliction is entitled to laugh at themselves. When others do, it tends to be inappropriate. Staff with 'gallows humour' do not deride their patients by pointing out to them or their loved ones what they cannot…

What are you looking for on this site?
Friendship, networking, sharing of ideas, mutual support. Meeting those with a similar perspective to my own, and being challenged by those with different ideas.
Areas of Specialty:
I set up and now run an IBS service, working with other health care professionals to give patients the best experience possible (well, that's the aim, anyway!).
I mentor students of hypnotherapy, and supervise their early practice in order to ensure that the level of practice is sufficiently high, and to provide help, guidance and support to the next generation, raising the standard.
About Me:
I'm an experienced intensive care, colorectal, upper GI and vascular surgical nurse who wanted a change in direction.

Now I've got it! I love nursing, I love making a real difference to peoples' lives by combining my hypnotherapy skills and my nursing ones. My nursing background informs my hypnosis (and gives me credibility in medical circles...they seem to like my ability to work beepy machines), and my hypnotherapy background makes me an interesting nurse to work with! Client safety is my priority. There is no room for the ego of the therapist: it's all about the client!
Hobbies:
Spending quality time with my wonderful husband and bunnies, photography, gardening, walking, chatting...

Well, it's time I fessed up...

Posted on August 15, 2011 at 7:23am 35 Comments

I'm 38 weeks pregnant and counting... and was unable to find someone professionally that I trusted enough to take me through hypnobirthing type classes. Someone very special (but also far away geographically) has made me some recordings to help motherhood on its way.

I want to do this as naturally as possible. I don't want to come across as a hypocrite for a start! And I want to have my little one using as much of mother nature's way as is possible.

Yikes!

150 Referrals! YAY!... Miserable GP... Boo!

Posted on May 19, 2011 at 8:22am 11 Comments

I've reached another milestone in my service. 150 referrals :-)

Sadly, in a meeting the other day about whether the service will be continued past its 7 month extension and made permanent, I was told that a GP (the same one who left a note asking why they'd employed a hypnotherapist and not a district nurse) who is in a senior position in one of the new commissioning consortia (and who's never referred a single patient or spent a single second with me or any patients who have…

Preparing for Being Filmed Tomorrow

Posted on May 2, 2011 at 8:33am 16 Comments

Well, it seemed like a good idea at the time: agreeing to be filmed by an international documentary crew about my IBS Hypnotherapy work. The crew have today been filming the originator of the research in IBS hypnotherapy for the program, and are making their way to see me tomorrow.

All of a sudden, I'm not sure what to say! ;-)

Reaching a Centenary

Posted on October 30, 2010 at 2:28am 6 Comments

Wow!

Yesterday I received my long-awaited 100th referral. I was really pleased to have my referral list in treble figures, but also sad because I know just how many more people there are, just counting those locally, who could and would benefit if they were referred to my service.

I figured out a while ago that I would need to get myself to a place where people with IBS would easily find me, and therefore not have to rely on someone else referring them in. My web presence has done… Continue

OUCH!

Posted on August 11, 2010 at 8:22am 14 Comments

When I first started this hypnotherapy lark, I would go to my 'day' job in intensive care, and actually feel people's pain. Their emotional distress became physically palpable to me. I would have to intentionally mentally switch off my 'joining the client' and put my detached, nursing hat back on.

As these days, I am full time in hypnotherapy, I am feeling more and more.

Does anyone else have this physical connection to their client's emotional state?
