So last night, I was watching a show called Men of a Certain Age. One of the main characters was golfing with his son and taught the boy a visualization technique for golf. The same character later applies the technique to another game. The son goes on to win a spot on his school's golf team.

Of course, the word hypnosis is never used. That might be a good thing, because when the dad suggests the son apply visualization to overcoming a phobia, the boy fails in his attempt.

Before I get to the observation, let me just say that I'm a skeptic when it comes to the whole notion of susceptibility scales, as are many people here.

However, the idea is part of the public consciousness, and it's a notion that a lot of us run up against when explaining hypnosis to the public. How often have you had someone say, "I don't think I can be hypnotized"? Frequently, if your experience is anything like mine.
