@Susan Here's my take. It might very well tick you off, and I do assure you that is not my primary intention. I've seen you post here on HT for a few years. As a 'pattern noticer' I have noticed a pattern of you asking…

Sometimes, yes.   'Body knowledge' certainly exists. We often talk of it. 'I had a hunch', 'It made sense but felt wrong', 'A gut feeling', and so on. Gendlin and his work with the philosophy of…

Interesting.   They tested one very very very good subject and noticed that when she was hypnotized with a PHS that her eye blink and movement changed.   The issue is that it's all too likely that this subject had gotten this…

Excellent!   And so work with the stuck feeling (if that's what he wants to change). It seems like he can get a good sense of that.   If he's happy with the stuck feeling, and he can't find anxiety, well then what does he…

I had the pleasure of having a skype session/conversation with Joe. Definitely a great experience. Joe is very knowledgeable, enthusiastic and willing to share. His "symbolic" approach to hypnosis and changework is very worth listening to.
Thanks Joe.

Joe,

In reference to your question as to what happens if the subject does not feel what you suggest:

I have found that there is only a few reasons why this would happen, almost all are based around your directions not being followed for one reason or another.

The reasons are mostly categorized into 4 groups:
1. The instructions were not understood
(what did he you mean by that? What does deeper mean? etc.)

2. The subject trying to "help" thus circumventing your instructions
(instead of taking the stairs one by one they shoot down to the bottom and wait for the next instruction kind of thing) This is why I always preface the induction with "there is nothing you can do to help me, other than to do an internal body scan and just look for the feeling I suggest."

3. The lack of desire to be hypnotized, either because of things like fear or even that their superconscious doesn't feel they deserve the help..(aka..I'm not worthy) This is usually solved with parts therapy, finding out if a part of them is standing in the way of them going into trance.

4. The ego. Wanting to "prove" that they can't be hypnotized.
When you explain that the conscious mind can only focus on one thing at a time, and that if they can do something and think of something else at the same time, it is a trance state where the body is automatically reacting, and all humans react this way as a species. It shows them that if they don't go into trance it is because they don't want to.. not because of your inability.

I always stress to the client that hypnosis is about desire, and permission. When encountering a problem, the most common reasons using the induction I gave you, are number two and number three.

That being said: There is one more reason that I have only run into only once. The subject is so emotionally repressed because of past trauma, that they literally can't feel anything. They have literally turned off their own ability to feel. You can switch modalities with these to one of the other senses.. taste, smell, etc to get around it.

Hope that helps
John

Hi Joe, sorry it has taken me forever to get back to you! Only need to pass the Foundations course to become a Certified Hypnotist. You can join AHA and get insurance for that level of certification. You do not need to take the advanced courses to get insurance and/or join AHA.
peace, michelle
