While there is a chance that it will not harm their progress, I think it is more likely that it can... Therefore, I would prefer to keep a "better-safe-than-sorry" approach.
Personally, legality or not, I would politely decline showing the notes to my client, and explain how well they're doing, and this can only harm their wonderful progress.
