Any tips for achieving higher rankings in search engines?

Hi. My website is over a year old, and I'm still not getting the response that I want. I currently use google adwords, which is rather expensive and not the most effective way of getting noticed. Does anyone know of a good way of becoming more optimized on the search engines, or do you know of a good, reasonably priced company to help you get there? Any tips are most welcome!
