Experiencing Stage Hypnosis . . .

I was chatting with someone recently about this and would love to get a broader opinion from this group. When someone is hypnotized in a stage setting and given suggestions . . . are they following the suggestions because, in trance, they feel compelled to "play along" or do they actually believe the suggestion?
