I would have to say that you are definitely correct on saying that the person may not need a deep trance to start accepting suggestions. Some of the best work I have ever done has been in the waking state without the mention of hypnosis.

I used to have terrible nightmares. I used the fast phobia cure from nlp, and the swish pattern, and self hypnosis with posthypnotic suggestions to have more pleasant dreams. I rarely have a bad dream. I hope this helps you.
