Thanks for sharing that thread, Kathleen. From what I am reading, it seems like Groupon can be used well or used disastrously.  I'm really liking the idea of promoting a self-hypnosis or stress management class with it, though . . .

My latest FDA rant.

Second only to insurance companies, is my disgust with the FDA. I begin to foam at the mouth when someone says that the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) serves to protect the public’s health. Someone will invariably refer to the severe birth defects associated with Thaladomide babies in an uninformed attempt to defend the FDA’s mission. The problems with Thaladomide were discovered in Europe, not by the FDA.

It is commonplace these days for the news headlines to announce that yet another drug has been withdrawn from the market due to toxicity problems. A classic example is Zelnorm, Novartis’s drug for IBS. It was introduced onto the US drug market with great fanfare and cute television commercials of dancing bellies in 2002. In March, 2006 it was withdrawn from the market due to toxicity and patient deaths. In 2000 there were reports to the FDA of 267,000 adverse drug reactions. By 2006 that number increased to 471,000 and the number of deaths tripled from 5,519 to 15,107. And there are almost monthly salmonella or E. Coli scares about our food supply with some food or the other being stripped from grocers shelves. The FDA seems to be lurching from one disaster to another like a drunk on a sinking ship.

Things have gotten so bad that the FDA commissioner Dr. Edward von Eschenbach requested a special assessment as to whether the FDA was capable of doing its job. The premise was that “the nation is at risk if FDA science is at risk.” The damning sixty page report concluded that the FDA “cannot even keep up with the advances in science” and that the FDA cannot fulfill its mission because its scientific workforce does not have sufficient capacity and capability.

The demise of the FDA as protector of the public’s health began in 2004 when officials caught flack for silencing a staff scientist who had concluded that antidepressants could increase suicidal behavior in teens. Other scientists have been pressured to soft pedal product dangers. That same year, they were criticized for dragging their feet in taking Vioxx off the market after it was shown to increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes. The FDA has drawn fire for not speeding decisions on new drugs that could potentially save lives and ease suffering and for soft-pedaling problems.

The truth is that the FDA is largely funded by the pharmaceutical companies it is supposed to police. Currently, pharmaceutical industry dollars fund more than half of the FDA’s drug review budget. In five years that proportion is expected to increase to 70%. And, 22% of the advisory board members who vote on which drugs and devices get approved have direct financial interests in the companies that they are supposed to evaluate or their rivals. That’s akin to having the burglar feed the guard dog. Then, we wonder why the dog didn’t bark when we were robbed. It truly is the best agency the drug manufacturers could buy.

So, what can we do? The very best thing you can do for yourself is to do everything in your power to stay healthy or to at least become no more unhealthy than you are now. If you are taking medications for chronic illnesses, do everything in your power to minimize your need for them. Then, work with your physician to reduce your dosages or to eliminate as many as you can to maintain your level of health. Begin to pay close attention to your diet. Eating healthy foods is important regardless of your current weight. Get daily physical exercise. Begin a daily practice of self hypnosis. Hypnosis boosts the number of circulating immune cells thereby preventing many viral and bacterial induced illnesses. It also lowers and stabilize your blood pressure and blood sugar. And, stress...... enough said. It is amazing to me how many hypnotherapists do not do daily self hypnosis. All of these promote a greater level of health.

Pleasant Grove and Pratt City, Al. tornado

Posted on April 29, 2011 at 9:13am 57 Comments

As many of you know I just relocated away from Alabama in Jan. of this year.  For 18 yrs I lived in the surburb of Pleasant Grove, Al outside of Birmingham, Al  It is the one that was hit by the tornado earlier this week.  My sister still lives there and was thankfully unhurt.  Her street was one of 2 in the community that was spared from total destruction.  There is no power and will not be for weeks to months since the substation was blown away also.  Most of the cell phone towers are gone…

A different kind of neighborhood watch

Posted on March 10, 2011 at 9:54am 11 Comments

The "neighborhood" alert system went off today.  It worked the way any other neighborhood watch program has. I got a call from a neighbor that I should be aware. There is a big mountain lion hanging around.  My next door neighbor saw it sunning itself lying in the road outside her house and drinking out of their horse trough.  So, the other neighbors have alerted all 9 houses on this mountain to be on the lookout and not be…

Moving IN

Posted on February 12, 2011 at 6:47am 8 Comments

The moving truck is gone.  The furniture is in the house but not necessarily where I had planned. The boxes are here--interminable boxes.  The heat, water and washing machine work so life on the mountain is good.  Each morning as I wake up I get to look out my window to see the most incredible views of the mountain tops and mountain meadows of Eldorado State Park.  No one will ever build there and ruin my daily Communion with God.  I"m incredibly lucky to get to be here.

The Packing Roller Coaster

Posted on January 30, 2011 at 11:39am 5 Comments

As I pack my house to move to Colorado later in the week I get the chance to sort not only my belongings but my emotions as well.  Each item has a memory attached.  As usual, some are  good, some not so good.  So, I decided to keep the good memories and toss all the stuff that has the not so good memories attached. That way I won't recall them as easily if they are not anchored to "stuff".

Are The Lights On Anywhere?

Posted on August 26, 2010 at 10:02am 4 Comments

Maybe it is because I've had 4 of these clients in one week--and it is only Thursday. Or maybe it is because both my daughter and I have experienced this same phenomenon. All I really know for sure is how upset and outright scared I am about the lack of thought most MD's are putting into patient care and about the system I call "The Shuffle."

"Betty's" experience is fairly typical so I will use her as the example. Betty and her husband went on vacation. While she was on…

I have always been curious about incredible things. When I first learned that hypnosis can be used to heal, I became even more interested in it. Life is changed, forever.

Melissa I thought that I left a comment but I must have done something wrong!  I first became interested in the power of the mind-body connection in the late 90's.  I had a near death experience and was not expected to make it.  I KNEW without a doubt that I would survive.  I did much to the surprise of the doctors and was back to my normal activities very quickly, despite being told that I be bedridden for a year.  Out of that experience I became interested in hypnosis and in accessing the subconscious mind.  I still had young children so was unable to pursue the training that I was most interested in (The Hypnotherapy Academy of America).  This past summer I finally made the decision that it was time!  I moved to Santa Fe for two months and had the most remarkable experience.  I am now developing and building my practice.  I currently have five clients and just recently associated with an osteopath's office.  All very exciting!

Hi Melissa, thanks for the welcome message. I originally got interested in hypnosis after have witnessed a hypnotherapist come to my junior high school and do a demonstration of self-hypnosis and hetero-hypnosis. I was amazed at the level of control he had over his body during the self-hypnosis. Then during the hetero-hypnosis he hypnotized a few students and had  them imagine that they were doing certain type of activities. I was amazed at the degree that the students were following the suggestions. I thought to myself, "wow, this seems to be powerful and useful stuff". That's how it started. Now I'm trying to get a lot of practice so that I can become a hypnotherapist myself.

Thank you for welcoming me to the site.  I first became interested in hypnosis about 25 years ago.  I have always been interested the the power of the mind.  A friend of mine was a hypnotist in the Phoenix area, and talked me into attending a course there.  Since that time I have hypnotized a lot of people, mostly for entertainment at parties.  I have been a member of our local Search and Rescue organization for about 30 years, and so, put on a Hypnosis Show for the group of about 80 for our Christmas Program this year.  It was a huge success, which caused me to dig out my books, and look into it further again.  Jay

Thank you for the welcome.  I first became interested in hypnosis many years back.  More, I was fascinated by the mind and by trance itself.  Eventually I had the time and the opportunity to dive into hypnosis and it's potential, and I've never looked back since.

Thanks for your message Melissa, I got interested in hypnosis because of the idea of how quick people can be helped with it. I started searching net and found free introductory course offered by HMI and after the very first lesson I knew this is what I want to do for the rest of my life. Few months after that course I went on HMI's Advanced Course and here I'm, starting my own practice, still learning a lot from various books and lately from all the wonderful people on HT Discussions ;-) Forgive me my poor english as it is not my mother tongue.
