Hello Howard - Many podcasters give a lot away for "free". Some of it is out of the goodness of their hearts, and other times it is NOT.

Often what podcasts provided for "free" is not really "free" in the sense that some people think of it. For example, a lot of TV programming is "free", but there are ads on that "free" programming. Ads make "free" TV, radio, newspapers, and websites possible. (We often don't think about the cost of time and attention that it takes to view the commercials on TV, and as such consider the programming free.)

Podcasters, free magazine publishers, and so on, give out what they hope will be valuable content (i.e., news, entertainment or training) to get people to see their ads and other promotions. Some people like myself do this to others get to know me and my work. I also get to mention things I want to promote. That is how it goes. :-)

As they say, "There is no free lunch." But if one is selective in what we view (watch or listen to) then we can get good value from these "free" offerings.

This website/network is a very good example how to do this well. Scott and his team are doing a very good job of providing a valuable service and content in exchange for the ability to monetize the site with ads. It is capitolism at its best, the American way, as we say.
