CONVINCERS - LEMON AND MAGNETIC FINGERS
There are two convincers I used prior to starting my formal hypnosis induction.
1. magnetic fingers
2. lemon experience
Even though the magnetic fingers experience is not a true convincer it works very well to create a belief in the client. When they focus and concentrate on the space between their fingers that you the hypnotist can bypass the critical factor and place suggestions on their subconscious mind.
However, even though that is a side benefit it is not the actual reason I use the magnetic fingers as a convincer. Even though the fingers coming together for the client can be quite dramatic, I am actually looking for the client that the fingers stay apart. I know the fingers will automatically come together, if I don’t say anything, but they don’t.
This was an actual revelation to my wife last evening. She was sitting on the couch and folded her hands together stuck her fingers up like goalpost and then in amazement, said to me. Did you know that your fingers automatically come together even if you don’t say anything? Welcome to my world Karen.
In the hospital setting, I use the magnetic fingers as a very quick bedside induction. In the office I use it to gather information to find the resistant and analytical client. The area that I live in has the highest per capita in the country of Ph.D. engineers, chemists and scientists that are all very analytical. When their fingers stay apart, I know it is from their conscious thought. It may be because I did not say that one finger was a minus and the other was a plus. Regardless, it indicates that they are not following instructions.
When they stay apart, I simply ask, why did you hold your fingers apart, and I tell them that it was a trick. That if they just stare at the space between the fingers they will automatically come together because of the anatomy. So for them to stay apart, they have to be thinking and not focusing or concentrating on the space. That for hypnosis to work for them, they must follow my directions. That any thought they have will override anything I say.
This is another opportunity in a different way to explain hypnosis and the conscious mind as a filter to the subconscious mind.
The key is to demonstrate to the client and have them do nothing until you say, raise your hands with your fingers looking like goalpost. Most important is that the first word out of your mouth is magnets, your fingers are magnets coming together. You do not want to give them time to realize that their fingers are already starting to come together.
MAGNETIC FINGERS CONVINCER SCRIPT
Have the client clasp both hands together, making sure the palms touch. The thumbs are crossed, and stick both index fingers up like goalpost.
Tell them to focus of the space between the fingers and focus on the space between the fingers only, as you repeat over and over your fingers are like magnets and coming together until they touch your fingers are magnets and they're coming together until they touch.
In reality, the fingers automatically come together and you praise their success and how that simple concentration and focus allow the subconscious mind a truly believe the fingers were magnets. However, the true purpose of this experience is to see if the fingers stay apart.
If they stay apart than the client is resistant, and that needs to be explored.
THE LEMON CONVINCER SCRIPT
The purpose is in two parts
1. To identify their dominant senses, in order to enhance your guided imagery and visualizations.
2. To show that a simple thought can create a biochemical and physiological response in the body. The reason hypnosis works for pain management and other glandular related problems..
If you don’t mind let your eyes gently close as you take in a nice abdominal breath.
Imagine or pretend that you’re at home in your kitchen.
Look around the room and pay attention to the sounds the sights and the light.
Listen for the hummm of the refrigerator…
Walk over to the refrigerator and as you do pay attention to your footsteps as you walk across the floor …you may or you may not hear your steps on the floor.
Open the door to the refrigerator… feel the cool air as it spills out onto your body.
Hear that hiss as the vacuum releases as you open the door… now today whether you normally have one or not today there’s a lemon in your refrigerator…
Look at the lemon… pay attention to its color as you reach in and take the lemon.
Notice the texture, the temperature, the size and the shape. Now take the lemon over to a place where you would normally cut up fruits or vegetables…
Take out your favorite knife… now slice the lemon… you may slice it lengthwise from end to
end or down the center. If you sliced from end to end then make a second slice creating a
wedge. If you sliced it down the center make another slice creating a ring and then cut the ring in half…
You may have noticed the juice as it oozes out on the cutting area … reach down and take either the wedge or the half ring and bring it up and smell the fragrance…you may notice memories being created…
Now open your mouth and take a big bite into that lemon. Feel and taste the juice as it squirts on your teeth and on your tongue… experience the increased salivation and notice the tart and tangy feeling at the corners of your jaw. Now swallow the lemon juice.
Open your eyes. What did you notice? What did you experience? What senses were stimulated?
Increased salivation was a biochemical the physiological response from a thought and every thought that you have creates some type of biochemical, physiological responses in some part of your body. What the mind possesses the body expresses.
