The "neighborhood" alert system went off today.  It worked the way any other neighborhood watch program has. I got a call from a neighbor that I should be aware. There is a big mountain lion hanging around.  My next door neighbor saw it sunning itself lying in the road outside her house and drinking out of their horse trough.  So, the other neighbors have alerted all 9 houses on this mountain to be on the lookout and not be outside without protection and not to let the dogs out without supervision--not even in my 8 ft chain link fence.  Apparently, that is not a deterent. And this lion is dangerous because it has lost its fear of humans as demonstrated by coming so close.  They say it is why we have not seen deer or elk in the past 2 weeks.  They have called in the lion hunters but since we don't have fresh snow it is impossible to track it.  I know my dogs were going crazy all morning.  I couldn't see what they were barking and growling at but there was definitely something in the tree line.  They haven't been like that before.
So, I think I will go buy bullets for my gun--and then try to find what box the gun is in.  Apparently, some lion killed a big buck in the next door neighbor's front pasture a few weeks ago but hadn't been back until now.  I'm going to put firewood in under the house today so I have it closer than the unlighted pasture shed.  The same neighbor that called said the bears will be coming back out soon and that I have to leave my doors locked during bear season because they are clever and know how to open them. They are not  as dangerous as the lions unless they feel cornered.   Living in the mountains is certainly a lifestyle change!

I was coming home late Saturday night and caught a glimpse of the cat crossing the road a mile or so from my house. Couldn't tell if it was male or female but it was BIG as in HUGE. I've had miniature horses about its size. Was really unnerving. My brother-in-law said my little .22 pistol would just irritate a cat that big and it would come chew my arm off because I had made it angry. I think maybe a bigger gun and lessons on how to use one are probably on my to-do list.

I didn't know we had gators in my part of Texas, either. They are pretty rare. The scariest thing I've seen was a feral hog walking up my driveway. I had trouble sleeping that night. If you don't think feral hogs are scary, then you don't know much about feral hogs. :-)

Perspective shift! Can't you come up with a hypnotic audio recording to tame those wild beasts?! Maybe a mating call planted on the opposite of the mountain? lol

This makes me wonder: what would the mating call of the N. American Hypnotist be?

James - I will be back teaching in Bastrop in a few weeks and I really do not want to run in to a gator.  If I do I am pretty sure we will be ready for it though.  Thanks for the heads up.

Melissa we have coyotes and can't let the cats out at night. We also have mountain lions that come into peoples back yard. When the lions come that close they must be very hungry. Bear are the worst and will break into your house for food.
