So.. Long story short..  I have a friend in Long beach who needs heart surgury to remove his defibrillator and fix his heart.  ( that is a REALLY long story )  There is a surgeon in Columbus, Oh who he is convinced can do it ( and is the only one who has said that he is willing to remove the unit from his chest )  but he must move to OHIO and change insurance to get the job done...

I told him that I would see if there were any hypnotists in the Columbus area that could either let him:  A)  use their address for mailing to LOOK as if he actually moved to OH...  B)  rent him a room or an apartment so he could actually move there for the few weeks of the surgery and post surgery.

I believe that the zip for the area he is looking at is 43210   ( the perfect zip for a hypnotist don't you think)

Ideas and suggestions as well as actual places to live are greatly appreciated.     OH YEAH.. he needs to do the "move" in the next 3 days....

Thanks

We all choose our patterns in life (subconsciously)

The pattern he chooses is a difficult life (against good advice, against all doctors in California, against insurance company, against flying, etc) with limited options (only one doctor, only heart surgery, only driving) in a limited time (move in 3 days, short life)

Another pattern is he asks for help, gets help, and then turns away the help and does it a harder way.

I would ask him how making his own life so difficult been working for him?  What message does he get from making it hard on himself?  What if he had a greater sense of deservedness?

Would he then find another, easier solution?, would he take your advice?

Would his body then accept the help from the 1st surgery and not reject it?

I really wish your friend well ... and do feel we do need some changes in our medical / legal systems so that more doctors are willing to work with high risk patients.  It is sad when patients have to travel long distances, sometimes out of the country they live in, merely to find doctors who are willing to help them.

Given the circumstances, his actually residing in Ohio seems like a much wiser plan.

Well...  I will let the legal beagles from the insurance companies hash that part out... as we speak he is packing his car to actually drive out to OH and rent an apartment so he can physically say he has moved to OH....   i told him to FLY as it would be less taxing on the body than 2 or 3 days in a car...  ( road trips can be fun but they can take a toll )  but once he gets it in his mind to do something....  he does it...  I can only offer advice to him.. I can't make him take it.

Most insurance policies have clauses that basically state if you are not on the up and up at the time of application, they can recind the policy, deny coverage, and not pay your bills ... so basically by claiming you live in Ohio just to obtain insurance coverage could be legal grounds to deny coverage ... and yes, as Vince C indicates (depending on the statutes in Ohio) this would most likely be considered insurance fraud, albiet it is highly doubtful anyone would seek prosecution ... I believe they would merely recind the policy, and leave your friend (the doctor and the hospital) high and dry.

it is the course of action that the DR. suggested he take.   I make no statement of legal or not as i am not a lawyer and only asking a question that my friend asked me to ask....

Thank you for the input though..  i will pass the info on though he has considered those things as well.

Richard,

I am truly sorry about your friend and I know you will do anything to save his life.  However, I wonder if this could be considered insurance fraud and the insurance company might "err" on the side of reneging on the coverage.

In any case, I would still risk it for the sake of his life knowing all this.
