Art Gallery: A powerful non-specific intervention for a wide variety of problems and issues...

I developed Art Gallery about a decade ago, and teach it to my students at the University of Toronto. This is a really useful technique that a lot of Canadian and American hypnotists and therapists have adopted to clear up all sorts of problems, while working content-free. If a client has a disturbing issue they wish to work on privately, or simply needs to gain insight into the issue at hand, Art Gallery is a great place to start. Here's the methodology in a simplified form:

  1. Induce trance through whatever means you choose
  2. Set up a bail-out anchor, such as my voice will go with you...
  3. Have the subject stand on the steps at the entrance of a large, beautiful art gallery. Preframe that it will be an enjoyable learning experience. Explain that there will be other people there too, and that there will be many paintings and drawings of various sizes to explore.
  4. Have the subject go up to a painting that is covered by a black sheet. This represents "The Problem". Have the sheet drop away and calibrate as the subject studies the problem. Have them signal with a head nod when they have all the learnings. (A head nod rather than speaking is used, as it will not fragment a lighter trance)
  5. Have the subject imagine walking into another room and stopping in front of another painting that is also covered. This represents "The REAL problem". Have the sheet drop away and calibrate. Often in the case of old patterns, the subject my weep quietly as they gain new understandings. Pace their experience verbally and let them nod when the learnings are absorbed.
  6. Now let them go to the third and final painting, which is preframed as "The Solution". Let the sheet fall away and calibrate; the subject nodding when they have absorbed all the learnings they need to fix the problem or deal with the issue at hand.
  7. Bring them back out and only discuss the content if they wish to talk about it.
In a very few minutes, Art Gallery can cause real and lasting change, both remedial and generative. The key is not to rush it, but give the subject time to process; particularly in deep trance. Note that there is much subtlety built in to the intervention. The other people in the background hint at the shared unconscious. This method also permits the subject's own unconscious mind to do the work without well-intended but overly controlling instructions from the hypnotist/therapist. Always pace the subject carefully to avoid abreaction, although it's unlikely due to the built-in dissociation created by seeing the painting in front of them. I wouldn't use this for a phobia or severe trauma, but it's excellent for relational problems, motivation, sports performance, etc., or anything where a fresh insight would be valuable. It's my first choice if a client is embarrassed about the issue they wish to work on, and permits them a sense of comfort and control. Let me know how well Art Galllery works for you...

Thanks Cheryl,

Use it and see what results you get. It's flexible, insofar as the locus of control is left with the client's unconscious mind, where it should be.

Now that's what I like to hear...

Thank you for sharing this. It was kind of serendipitous as I was able to use it with a client a few hours after reading this post.

What a fantastic idea. I use art in my own healing - I'm pretty good with images. I imagine an image in my mind - it might be the problem, the feelings about a problem, or the solution. The image I put up as my profile pic here is my most recent creation. It is a representation of my inner family inside a snowglobe, which I hold in the palm of my hand. It's about taking charge, keeping my inner children safe and also about the idea that I can choose when to deal with the issues and when to put them on the shelf.

Absolutely, Bill! Full marks there! That's why I typically wouldn't use the words "You will see..." Instead saying "You will be aware of..." Much like the "floating" of Time Line Therapy. Floating can be kinaesthetic, visual or even auditory , as a note of music floats...

What I like is that this technique is easily adapted for a kinaesthetic by changing the art to sculpture and letting the client feel it.

Thank you, I will apply this technique when appropriate. It reminds me a bit of the "Library" concept, wherein the client finds his personal stacks and selects books relative to his issues and emotions...
