Chapter 07 - Personal Computing
The spiritual/religious frame has been established, which means it's time to add the hypnotic element and I do that in this chapter by paying homage to Richard Bandler's "Design Human Engineering" program, using the computer metaphor instead of the engineering control room. I start the chapter by explaining the metaphor...
"First, I want to make sure you have a handle on this new metaphor, so, let's quickly talk about how the computer model represents the different parts of the mind so that you can visualize how we can use this metaphor, along with the other things we have already learned, to better our lives and the lives of those around us.
Now, understand that in this metaphor the conscious mind is represented by the user interface devices, like the keyboard and mouse. These devices give the user access to the computer and similarly we will use our conscious mind to access the rest of our mind. Your unconscious is the software on your mental computer. It's the operating system and programs you use on a daily basis and the hardware, the physical computer, including it's power supply, represents the super conscious mind.
We will basically be using the conscious mind to operate the programs in your unconscious mind, which in turn will use the superconscious mind to perform the tasks we assign it. It's simple, really, isn't it? Of course it is."
I continue by explaining that we will connect the conscious mind to the unconscious mind through a process known as self hypnosis, which is really nothing more than a state of guided meditation and that we will only be going into a mildly hypnotic state because we still want to maintain enough consciousness to be able to do the work. We will achieve this state by combining the deep breathing relaxation techniques from the meditative arts with a mildly hypnotic that I created. (I use this deep breathing mantra as a prelude to every induction, no matter if it's prolonged, rapid, or instant. It's a very effective way to open a path to the unconscious)
"Slowly, breathe in... and... gently, calm down... Now... slowly, breathe in... and... gently, calm down... Now... slowly, breathe in... and... gently, calm down... Now... continue repeating that mantra, silently to yourself, moving that internal voice to the back of your mind, as you shift your focus to the growing sensation of relaxation within your body, specifically beginning with your feet,"
I am a huge proponent of the use of "loops" simply because it sets up a pattern interrupt situation, which I use in this situation to transition into a progressive relaxation deepener, which is also set up on a loop system. I like to start at the feet and move upwards when using progressive relaxation as an induction so that I can end by encouraging the person to imagine that they can see the stress and tension leave their body out of the top of the head, which causes their eyes to roll upwards, setting up to trigger the induction with a sleep command, but since I want to maintain a mild hypnotic state at this point of the exercise, I purposely omit that step. (I will include it in an exercise in the next chapter) Next I encourage them to...
"allow yourself to continue drifting deeper and deeper into the sensation of relaxation as I explain exactly how you can use the computer metaphor to prepare yourself, to prepare your mind, to communicate with the super conscious to more easily take control of your life and your future.
As every computer owner knows, from time to time, your computer begins to slow down and needs to be cleaned of all the useless, irrelevant information that gets built up over time, so it's easy to understand that it would also benefit you to clean out all the useless, irrelevant information from your mind as well. All you need to do to do that is to run a program similar to the maintenance programs on your computer, in your mind.
There are several of these types of programs available for your computer, but they all effectively do the same thing. They clear all the junk files, empty all the temporary folders, they clean your registry and of course, remove all the spyware and malware off your computer. Once that is complete, most people go ahead and defragment and optimize the hard drive. It's not only good to do this type of maintenance routinely, it's also recommended to do this before you install new programs or after uninstalling a lot of old programs."
I guide them through the process of clearing their mind through the metaphor of running the disk cleaner, spyware/malware cleaner and registry cleaner on their "internal" computer's "hard drive", all while linking the process to a deeper sensation of relaxation, then I run the defragment and optimizing program which actually continues to deepen the sensation of relaxation, gently progressing them into a hypnotic state, but not before I give the post hypnotic suggestion that there is an "auto wake" feature to the program which will wake them when their mind is completely defragmented and optimized, and that they will awake feeling refreshed, renewed, and ready to continue learning...
