Over the last two decades as a trainer and clinician, it's become incumbent for me to design a paradigm to create a logical, universal approach to treatment for a wide variety of issues, from anxieties and depression, to public speaking and sports performance. That's why I always tell my students: Detraumatize first. Whatever else you have in mind, whatever you are planning to anchor, suggest, reinforce, install, reframe or rectify. Detraumatize first. I've applied this concept with forensic work in homicides, sex offenses and armed robbery cases with excellent results. By detraumatizing the subject first, the resource states become far more accessible. This helps produce something close to a tabula rasa by removing the habituated blocks to healing. It's a simple, but profound instruction that will make all your work easier and more elegant. Once the trauma is dealt with, "the rest is a matter of technique", as we say in chess.

But it's only a generalization...and ALL generalizations are bad...
Not being literal has its advantages.

Hi Kevin,

I agree with you entirely. Naturally, resource states that will permit the client to accept the therapy are essential; even if it's only accomplished through building rapport and pacing their current experience. I'm referring here to massive installations of new behaviors and the integration of resources that will resolve issues.

Hi Mike, I'm going to be a bit of a "flip flopper" here and go back -slightly- on my 100% agreement with you and make it a 90-95% agreement ;-). After reading your last response to Doc, I realized I had misunderstood exactly what you stated...

I believe it depends on the client and situation. Often I find that building up resources before going anywhere near working with a specific trauma, proves to be most elegant and effective approach. That said, again it depends on the circumstance.

For example with extreme post traumatic stress where a client is simply too overwhelmed with negative emotions to be able to allow him/herself to experience a positive one fully first, I do agree with you 100%.

Other times however, I find that building those resources first-before addressing the trauma-, for example before regressing them via Time Line work or other kinds of regression work of any kind, to be most effective and most pleasurable for my clients and considerably safer as well.

I also find that it makes EFT considerably more effective - when possible- to access the resources of Self Love and even Forgiveness:: so that when they say "Even though I feel this ______ , I deeply and completely love and accept/forgive myself" they have a more solid experience of the exercise and what it means to actually love and forgive themself, as apposed to it just being words.

Again, of course it's always on a case by case basis and as I always like to say, "human beings are the ultimate variable"...

Still, I like your way of thinking... I suspect we both come from the point of view that whatever helps our clients achieve their goals with the least amount of pain and the greatest amount of pleasure and... in the safest way possible... Do it.

I am in accord then with your work. Well done.

Hi Doc,

No. What I mean is ensure detraumatization is complete prior to accessing resource states; however that is done.

In total agreement with your post, and both additional comments, Mike. Especially "Always let the situation dictate the response. Never go in with a plan..."

Welcome to Hypnothoughts...

As a general rule, if there is retraumatization, it indicates an incomplete detraumatization.

So are you saying to your students that they are to successfully "detraumatize" their clients 100% prior to inducing them into hypnosis?

EFT works amazingly well. I continue to be surprised by that method.
