Finding the Good in Goodbye

I recently had a bereavement client who was struggling with the loss of a close relative. The client came in and informed me that they didn’t think I would be able to help as she needed answers only her dead relative could answer. Well as I’m not a psychic or a medium and have no ability to talk to the dead, I had to agree with her that due to my skill base or lack of it I wouldn’t be able to ask her dead relative.

So I asked her what questions she wanted answered, and she told me. I then sat back and asked her to tell me her story, which she did. I listened intently and occasionally asked a question of my own. Now the most fascinating thing was that within her story as she shared her narrative where all the answers to her questions.

With a little bit of help from me and a little bit of discussion we discovered all the answers where there hiding in plain sight only hidden by the fact that she had never told her story out loud and had never looked objectively at her story from the position of someone looking in.

To her amazement and if I’m honest to mine we answered all the questions and dealt with 3 years of unresolved pain in 50 minutes. She stood up and said “It feels like a giant weight has just been lifted of my shoulders, I’m so relieved” I love a good positive physical metaphor; I shall never cease to be amazed at the minds capacity for healing or my client’s ability to change.

An Irish Blessing

May the road rise to meet you

May the wind always be on your back

May the sun shine warm upon your face

And may the rains fall soft upon your fields

Walk in peace and contentment

Wherever on your road you may be

And till we meet again

May god hold you gently in the hollow of his hand.

With respect Nath

Very nice indeed.  It is important to be a good listener and this just reinforces that message.

Thanks Nath

Hi Kevin, Kathleen and Bill Thank you all for your kind words, it was as sessions go the perfect storm and had very little to do with me apart from my ears working to their maximum.

I value and respect your words and wisdom smiles Nath

Very well done, Nath...

I enjoyed reading that. You of course come from a therapist background and understand the power of listening- and sometimes hypnosis/nlp professionals try so hard to be "content free" that they miss out of the valuable opportunities of allowing our clients to do half- or more- of the work by simply being heard- and being given the space to hear themselves...

People sometimes think I'm crazy for enjoying it- but I love working with grief clients. There's just tremendous satisfaction in guiding them away from so much pain- and towards experiencing so much pleasure...

Stay Well,

-Kevin

So true.  And sometimes just talking to someone who knows how to listen can make all the difference.  How many people have nobody to unburden themselves to?  Not someone to solve their problems, just someone to listen, because telling the story is in and of itself, can be healing.

Great story, Nathan.

PS  I was going to make a pun about the hell in hello, but decided against it.  Maybe I'll muse about what's fair in farewell instead . . .
