A few months ago I wrote a short blog about using hypnosis to heal a broken wrist. I saw the doctor on Monday and he was so excited about how well I'd healed that he asked if I wanted to see the x-ray. He hadn't offered the first two visits but this time he was as excited as a little kid. Well, of course, I'd love to see the proof.

He showed me how you could hardly even see where it had been broken, he showed me that I had a great deal of new bone AND he admitted (ta da!) that I'd made the right decision in turning down surgery. My range of motion is almost normal already... no need for physical therapy. And I never had any pain.

I love hypnosis.

@Bill
I don't know of any specific research although I'm sure it exists. I know that I've read reports of patients going into remission from cancer if they believe the drug they're being given is the new wonder drug.

Check out Dr. Bruce Lipton. He's doing cutting edge work. He is a former medical school professor and research scientist.

"Lipton also discussed cellular consciousness, identity, and how perceptions control our biology -- something called epigenetic control. Lipton believes every cell is a "programmable chip" and that the genes within our cells can be rewritten to restore health and well-being. This means we have the power to heal ourselves by changing the way think about our biology, Lipton concluded."

Hi Katherine,

Note: This post is not to diminish your accomplishment or doubt your words in any way. I want to understand what hypnosis can do.

I spoke of your experience to a friend who is a bio-technology researcher. His explanation of how hypnosis can be used to heal a broken wrist went like this. Bones are always in a state of flux, with one group of cells breaking them down and another building them up. It is not possible for a person to intervene mentally in this process. However, many people's immune and nervous systems are compromised by high levels of cortico-steroids (i.e. substances released through stress). Any process that reduces stress will have an immediate and measurable positive effect on healing.

By my friend's model, you improved your healing by reducing stress rather than specific suggestions aimed at the wrist. He was quite willing to agree that the body reacts physically to suggestion. The example he used was giving someone a sugar pill but saying it's a cancer drug can cause that person's hair to fall out, but it won't affect the cancer.

I'm not taking a position here. I am just trying to understand how the mental processes interact with the physical ones. Can anyone point me to research that refutes my friend's position?

Thanks everyone. Good idea about posting it to my website. Thanks, Doc.

One other note - I told the doctor that I was hardly to wear the removable splint over the last 4-5 days before my appointment. He said that it was another indication that my wrist was healed. He had also told me that he rehearses every surgery in my mind the night before. I'm happy to meet a doctor with an open mind and who puts his mind to good use. LOL

B R A V O ! ! Perhaps the doctor could do a write up that you could quote in your marketing materials.
