iPad already changing the Internet - If you run flash on your website... read this.

From Slashdot:

The Internet's already starting to look different, says Gizmodo, in a piece of interest not only to everyone with an iPad floating around the UPS system, but also those of us thinking about some other kind of tablet in the medium-term future. As they put it, "The iPad doesn't run Flash. If your website uses Flash, it won't play well on the iPad. Turns out, a lot of people want their sites to look pretty on the iPad."

And a reader adds this snippet from Webmonkey:

"In anticipation of Saturday's release of the iPad — which doesn't run Flash — Apple has published a
list of 'iPad Ready' websites.

The sites are all big league sluggers like CNN, The New York Times, People Magazine and MLB.com. Surprisingly, there are also a few video-heavy sites in the mix (Vimeo, Flickr, and TED) which would traditionally rely on Flash Player for video playback."

Takeaway Points:

Consensus is the iPad is already causing a paradigm shift in computing. It is expected that this year Apple will sell 5 - 7 million of these devices. If you add in over 42 million iPhones in use worldwide and you are looking at nearly 50 million computing devices that do NOT play anything using the flash format.

This does not even include iPod touch devices of which there are also many millions in daily use.

So if your website is using flash, you better come up with an alternative way to get the same information across.

And here is where it impacts my world of online marketing... all the video players I know of for websites are FLASH based.

This is extremely important because video has a HUGE impact on website conversion! Massively huge impact on conversion.

I am actively hunting for a non flash based video player to recommend to my clients. If I find one I'll post it here.

One bit of good news... YouTube players embedded are supposed to work. So if you have videos on YouTube, you should be fine. Of course, as a former IT guy I won't be satisfied until I test it.

Cheers,

Craig

Craig, I don't think you read my comment properly. I haven't ignored this. I acted on it years ago!

From USA Today:

"Apple thinks Flash is buggy and prone to crashing computers. It wants media presented in the alternative HTML5 format. That's fine, but if you bring home the iPad this weekend, you'll find many sites urge you to "Download the latest Adobe Flash Player." If you try, it won't work. However, many websites are quickly implementing HTML5 to accommodate iPad users."

Seems like a silly reaction to me. Just because an Apple device cannot display the content as stylishly as the designer may way, it does not mean that the content is inaccessible.

Apple changed the mobile phone world in ways no one anticipated. And the 'smart money' in Internet Marketing and Internet Technology is paying very close attention to this issue.

Your choice to ignore it or not.

Seems like a silly reaction to me. Just because an Apple device cannot display the content as stylishly as the designer may way, it does not mean that the content is inaccessible. (Of course, that presumes that the site has been built with standards in mind!) Surely this is one of the reasons that we all switched to separating style from content via CSS so many years ago?

Good find Hugh.

My big concern with using HTML 5 based players (like sublime) is it is only supported in the very latest versions of browsers. Sadly there are a large number of people running older browsers. Hell I only upgraded to Firefox 3.6 this week myself. I prefer to wait for the .1 or .2 versions to make sure they get the bugs worked out.

But in checking my logs and logs on clients sites, at least 50% are running browsers not HTML 5 compatible.

What will likely be needed is a hybrid video player that uses flash as default, but can check for browser type and platform then swap to HTML 5 player.

And I'm betting someone is thinking about solving this problem as iPads rollout. Maybe the Sublime folks will do it first.

http://jilion.com/sublime/video The sublime video player may fulfill that requirement Craig, It certainly claims to, and JoomlaXTC is working to get one out the door this month for Joomla and Drupal or so I am told.
