First impressions:
The pages smell of chemical. The paper it's printed on is high quality, though too thick and slick for my liking -- the sound of its turning heavy and off key which is, perhaps, appropriate as there will be no leafing through this telling; and my fingers, they skid too quick the slippery length of its pages. The dust jacket, however, is reminiscent of rice paper and as such much to my liking. The numerically odd right-hand pages are all "IQ84" titled & numbered in a mirrored font (so, backwards [unless you read by spoon, happen to be gazing in a mirror, or have a neurological disorder I'm certain there's a name for though I don't know it] ) which continues to find me smiling beyond the awesomeness that is this:
"I'll be careful," Aomame said.
"And also," the driver said, facing the mirror, "please remember: things are not what they seem."
Things are not what they seem, Aomame repeated mentally. "What do you mean by that?" she asked with knitted brows.
The driver chose his words carefully: "It's just that you're about to do something out of the ordinary. Am I right? People do not ordinarily climb down the emergency stairs of the Metropolitan Expressway in the middle of the day--especially women."
"I suppose you're right."
"Right. And after you do something like that, the everyday look of things might seem to change a little. Things may look different to you than they did before. I've had that experience myself. But don't let appearances fool you. There's always only one reality".

Espresso for breakfast, the inevitable gastric acid upset, and a near over-dose of Adrenaline will do that to a girl. The blackened scowl smeared across her mouth a flourish to the general impression of rot.
Out of the ordinary... the uninterrupted blare of the cabby's car horn indicating to those in the know a man unconscious, his torso slumped over a steering wheel turned pillow -- a scenario that certainly fit Out of the Ordinary as a descriptor. "Breakfast would have served me better than the clean underwear" she thought approaching what-the-fuck-else in the guise of a limousine no longer parked illegally; now its engine was idling.
Comment by Bill Kennedy on February 12, 2012 at 5:25pm "Sleep!" she barked, as she sent a sharp jab to his windpipe. The combined confusion, hypnotic command and sudden loss of oxygen made the cab driver slump forward, releasing the door locks as his forehead hit the horn. In a flash she was out of the cab, stumbling down the emergency stairs to where a limousine with tinted windows was illegally parked.
Comment by Taymara on February 11, 2012 at 8:44pm "Again?" she thought and laughed aloud, somewhat startling her cab driver. "Only if there was a first."
He cocked an eyebrow, displaying a lack of understanding. Distracted by images of how this moment would play out, he simply didn't pause long enough to parse the possibilities of meaning. His means to an end, though shortly there would be many, a previously and well traveled path. He was expecting no surprises.
Comment by Bill Kennedy on February 11, 2012 at 9:39am Hi Taymara,
It wasn't a quote. I was continuing the story in a changed direction. :) At first, I didn't realize you were discussing the physical feel of a real novel. I thought it was all part of your story. Then I googled and found 1Q84, a Japanese trilogy set in 1984 - a deliberate reference to George Orwell. Now I want to read it!
Comment by Taymara on February 11, 2012 at 9:20am My thought in posting the above in this realm was change begins when change begins, though (perhaps) the only real difference is in the difference. ;p
Your turn. Why'd you pull the quote you did?
Comment by Bill Kennedy on February 11, 2012 at 3:17am "You're very perceptive." She wondered if she could test the door handle without him noticing.
"For a cab driver you mean? That's the price of a PhD in philosophy."
It was locked. Again, she was trapped . . .
