Recently I was invited to teach a module to first year med students on Complimentary and Alternative Medicine at UC Irvine. This is a school known for having a great science department, including its medical school and integrative medicine research. Obviously, I was very excited to be given the opportunity to present there.

The class is an elective for first year med students, and has been growing in content over the last few years. It started with only acupuncture, and has since grown. This is the first year that they have included hypnotherapy into the curriculum. Based on the conversation with the professor and TA, they are interested in discussing NLP in the future as well.

I taught some very basic what hypnosis is/isn't didactic content and answered questions before getting into about 45 minutes of demonstrations. It was a lot of fun and the students and professor seemed to enjoy it.

I'm not writing this to brag, but to encourage those of you out there getting started that it is absolutely possible to be accepted by the "mainstream" and to find relationships in the medical and academic communities with people who respect you and what you can do to help people. Earn the trust and respect of the medical community in your area. This starts with showing them respect and moves on from there.

Updates to the site are coming soon.

Stay tuned,

Scott

That's great Scott. You're right, this is a great area to explore. A few years ago I taught the mind/body connection for UC Davis Medical Center's PA/FNP class. It was a required class so not everyone was thrilled that I was there BUT after I gave them the lecture and hypnotized the group, they had quite a different attitude. I still get referrals from some of the PAs.

I also included EFT in my talk and did a demonstration. The demo subject released an intense fear of heights permanently.

That's wonderful! I see it all the time how the first words a physician says to a patient, makes or breaks how they begin the healing process! I just received some wonderful feedback last evening from family of a patient I cared for over a year ago in the ER. Their family member, for the first time, completed and followed through with detox and is a year successfully dry and sober. Even in a rushed area like working the busy ER, just a few moments of reframing can make a huge difference!

Congrats Scott, that's awesome that hypnotherapy is being included in the curriculum like that and to consider NLP is even better.

Well done!

Well done. I also agree that too many within the professional hypnosis community see the doctors, psychologists and the like as the enemy. They are not. Working with the licensed communities we can accomplish so much more (while building our reputation as worthwhile and competent practitioners).

Awesome post. Inspiring and true.

Nearly every medical doctor I have talked to is interested in the potential hypnosis offers for their patients.
And I used to meet a lot of them whilst running training courses for a mental health trust in the UK.

Unfortunately so many people in our profession seem to see the medical community as the enemy and nothing could be further from the truth. We're ultimately all just trying to help people.
