Humour = spelt correctly = engenders the production of Dopamine which is an enzyme that acts as a neurotransmitter, think of it as oil for your thinking and learning system.

If you are studying something try spending ten minutes on Youtube laughing at people screwing up - always works for me - then learn.

In hypnosis you can add some laughs and feel good by taking them to a remembered or fantasised place here something funny is happening. You are not making fun of them or of their situation but you'll find it way easier to use suggestion if they are happy than when they are down.

In fact it's highly probably that taking someone into something that makes them feel bad make it harder for both of you.

Hi Carol,

It's the subconscious that understands humour.

Think of this. Humour defies logic and reason, that's why it funny. Humour is entirely emotional and idiosyncratic, that's why crying and even loss of bladder control is associated with a really good laugh.

The concious is the seat of reason and logic and therefore doesn't understand humour.

Think also who is it easier to give suggestions to? Someone lost in laughter or a focused reasoning and logical person analysing your every word?

There are a lot of contradictions around in hypnosis that don't stand up to any decent level of thinking through.

I dont recall where I read it, but am under the assumption that the subconscious mind doenst understand negatives or humor.......Im thinking Nathan Thomas or Igor Ledowski maybe?...

Playful, Playful, Playful .... It's sort of a rule I use when teaching folks about Hypnosis. I have always found that humour and astonishment are great openers for setting Hypnotic Phenomena.

I have used humour / humor in hypnosis and was happy to see the resulting smile without the person coming out of trance. Humour helps you put things in perspective.

Thanks.

I don't think we 'repress' at all Jim. We just forget and or jumble stuff together.

I know if I can hypnotise someone I can give them a memory, why should what they give me be any more real?

I couldn't agree more Jonathan! My suspicion is that people's repression of positive memories is a problem that is equal to or greater than their repressed traumas. It does't have to be all gloom and doom and heavy stuff-unless you have convinced yourself of that! ;-) Jim
