A new study came out that might have us re-think what we have been recommending to our clients in regards to how much exercise they need to do to lose weight.
In actuality, I have always told my clients who come to see me for weight loss, that we don't have to exercise to lose weight. We just have to reduce our caloric intake and we will lose weight without exercise. The benefit of exercise is really to prevent us from losing muscle and stimulate the removal of fat cells from the body. There is another benefit to exercise that improves our health and immune response. We have two circulatory systems. One is powered by the heart muscle which pumps blood through our body and bathes each of our cells with the oxygen we need and the fuel we require to keep our machine, our body running efficiently.
The other circulatory system is the lymphatic system that is powered by an intricate system of one way valves. This system requires movement to push the lymphatic fluids around the system. As we move, even breathe intensely, we power our lymphatic system to move the waste materials out of our body. You can view the lymph system as the sanitation department of our body. When it is acting efficiently we remove the waste materials left over from the manufacturing process and allow our immune system to function unimpeded by these poisons.
So exercise serves a dual purpose with the major benefit being that we improve our health and longevity. The minor benefit is weight loss. And for many years it has been recommended that we get at least 30 minutes of exercise daily in order to lose weight.
This new study, from Taiwan, shows that we don't need quite that much exercise and we can lose just as much weight and extend our life a significant number of years with quite a bit less than that.
