As a client, you don't always know what to expect. I had trouble visualizing in trance. The therapist would suggest I was in a hall and I could barely make it out. They would talk about a door and all I could see was the handle. Finally I talked to the therapist about my experience. That's when I learned about different modalities and we determined that I was kinesthetic.
As this is less common than visual or auditory, I thought I would start a discussion to help those working with other kinesthetics develop more powerful imagery and language.
A very common induction involves writing a capital letter, starting with "A", in a circle on a chalkboard, then erasing it and writing the next one. It happened to be on a recording I used to listen to a lot. I never liked this deepener and I have finally realized why: I don't like the feel of chalk on a chalk board. Here is a replacement to be used when you wish to occupy the conscious mind as you work with the unconscious:
This is an exercise in improving your perception in trance. It will also deepen your trance. Start by picturing a very comfortable antique writing desk with the luxurious feel of high quality wood and the faint smell of furniture wax. There is a quill pen cut from a goose feather and inkwell beside a stack of high quality writing paper. I would like you to sit at the desk, take a sheet of paper, dip your quill into the inkwell and practice writing the word "deeper". Feel the texture of the paper through the quill. Hear the gentle scratching of the nib on the page. See how beautifully you can form the letters. Practice writing the word "deeper" over and over, going slowly and deliberately, each repetition becoming clearer than the last. Continue practicing until I ask you to stop.
If the other work is taking a long time, you could say:
Excellent writing. Please continue the exercise, only changing the word you are practicing with your quill pen to "relax."
Who knows, this exercise might also improve your client's penmanship!
Another common image is dials. I have been asked to remember a positive experience and then turn the dial to increase the intensity. It really helped me when the hypnotist described the dial as one of the ones with the indents for your fingers. But what works best for me is sliders, like the kind they have on sound mixing boards. When I move the slider to the top of the range, I know that I am boosting the feeling to the max. It wouldn't bother me at all if the hypnotist then suggested that they had increased the sensitivity of that slider and I was to now boost it to the new max.
If you have any advice about what works best with kinesthetics, please add it below.
