Please Stop Threatening to Sue HypnoThoughts

I hate to be a downer, but I've got to get this out there.

In the last five days I've had three people threaten to sue HypnoThoughts (or me personally) because of actions of other members. This has graduated from silly to annoying.

The other moderators and I get reports of spam, abusive behavior, and inappropriate comments on a weekly basis and I'm totally fine with that. We are here to help keep things organized, civil, and fun. We enjoy helping people make their experience on here better. Threats aren't really cool or productive, nor do they keep in line with the overall theme of this site, which is respectful and effective communication.

Here's the basic run down:

This site doesn't make money (in fact, it historically loses money). When you sign up as a member you give the site and its moderators the right to delete posts or your profile at our discretion. At the bottom of every page it says we aren't responsible for the actions or opinions of other members. With that knowledge, who wants to be the person responsible for suing and shutting down this free resource?

If you have a problem, let us know and we are happy to work with you. We are all very nice, well intentioned people. I really don't want to spend any more time playing chicken with people expecting me to be scared or impressed by their indignation, especially when it's based on a personal issue originating somewhere other than this community or something that can be easily resolved when emotion is removed from a situation.

Here's the good news:

I've created a copy/paste response for anyone threatening legal action, so now if anyone writes something with threats of lawsuits I will just send that and wait to hear from their lawyer without solving their problem. Now I don't have to waste any more time with that kind of thing and can keep being productive.

In closing:

Please keep contacting us with problems and let us help you. The moderators and I are more than happy to help, and usually really appreciate the heads up you guys give us. There is a lot of new content posted on this site every day, and you all do a great job of being overwhelmingly supportive and respectful of each other, as well as helpful to those of us who work behind the scenes.

We have some big upgrades that we are working on, including upgrading the referral directory and another big project that should help many of you make more money. The HypnoSummit progam guide is being worked on this very second and we are hoping to share the list of great speakers and topics later this week. The site is growing at over 200 new members a month for over 18 straight months, and I'm really proud of what this community is doing as a whole.

So if you feel like something on this site is so unjust and/or damaging that you want to call a lawyer, please contact us first and make us aware of the situation. Keep your goal in mind and remember that our goal is to help the members of this community enjoy the site and gain value from each other.

Have a great day,
Scott

Just to point out... on the main page of Hypnothoughts at the bottom, is a 'donate' to hypnothoughts link.
(for those who indicate they want to pay a monthly/yearly fee)
Join the many people who contribute to this site. ~grin. (hey, I'm reading Caildini - haha...)
Don't be the only one who hasn't donated!
Support the things you believe in.

Richard,

Nah, no cause for concern- my wife paid a hacker to mess with Amazon's numbers in order to boost my sagging morale...; - )

Un-freaking-believable. So sorry you've had to go through this. This is a monumentally valuable site for us. Maybe you could post your statement above as a disclaimer and make it more visible.

I agree with Karena: I would contribute a monthly fee. In fact, if you put a little link in there for donations or whatever, I would contribute.

Perhaps also, we could write a statement about our rules, our practices, your non-responsibility, your nonprofit status (even if not by choice) and the value to us and the public at large and let people sign and comment before it happens again. I wonder if libel and slander laws protect you as well and if these could be posted along with the disclaimer: TALK TO US FIRST FOOL!!!!

Saul, I was going to sue you because your book was outselling mine for a few weeks....

Scott,

I kept waiting for the "punchline" because I couldn't even IMAGINE that your were "serious"!
I suppose that's why the expression exists: "ONLY in America!"
Sigh...

P.S. I suppose NOW I'll have to worry about people suing ME if they don't like my BOOK!
JEEZ!
Only in America!!

As my wise old mother used to say, "No good deed goes unpunished." The good news is that you'd have a line of 5,600 very satisfied Hypno-Thoughts members lined up out the court room door waiting to testify on your behalf. Thanks, Scott, for all you've done and keep up the good work.

"...punish people by making them hire lawyers." Oh my! The things we can learn on Hypnothoughts!

Scott,

You have started a fantastic forum. By all means do whatever is necessary to keep it that way.

Only the best,

Scott,

Roy Cohn, the lawyer for the notorious Senator Joseph McCarthy in the 1950s, said, "In this society, you punish people by making them hire lawyers." If you have this prominently-featured disclaimer, I don't see how any of these people have a leg to stand on. We're with you 100%!!!

What a bunch of plonkers!
This is a brilliant sight, you guys do a great job, and everybody has some great input with helping each other out education, tips n tricks, I even like the stupid stuff, misunderstandings, cross purposes, sometime it gets like a soap opera, which makes this site very human and organic, I wouldn't want it any other way :-)
Donations: why not set up a paypal button for donations?
.
Fantastic site thanks

Pete
