Wanted to give everyone a heads up on a scam attempt I encountered today. I received a message from a "Judy" who stated that she was working with Blue Cross/Blue Shield employees who need a hypnotherapist for things like smoking, wt loss and stress reduction. The call back # she provided was 1 800 727 3757 (although the # on caller ID was (631) 941-4613.)

Being the world renowned author of the "Little Book of Scams: Swindling for Fun and Profit" I did my due diligence and ran those numbers through Google. Lo and behold both numbers have been reported as originating from a den of thieves that targets service professionals, including people in the holistic healthcare field.

The initial come on is that they represent some large firm whose employees could use your services-who wouldn't want a referral source like that?

Those who fell for their pitch state that they then were hawked high-priced yet worthless promotional schemes. And as the message that I received and those of others who have complained about them show, they intimate they are connected with large reputable firms when they are not-which borders on criminal fraud.

Be safe! Jim

P.S. A good practice is to enter suspicious telephone numbers into a search engine before calling back. There are a number of sites that allow people to post complaints about junk callers, cons and swindles and the telephone numbers the offenders use.

Susan, to find the complaint sites simply put in the full telephone # into google and you will find sites with names like "who called me?" and the like. They allow people to file reports and it helps build a public database regarding the telephone #'s used by the scam artists. Often they are call centers that cater to these types of illegal operations.

Thanks Jim.  Good to know.  Especially about calling the number back.  What are the complaint sites, btw?  Thanks.  Susan

Glad to be of service @John, James & Kelley. This scam was particularly disturbing since clearly someone is doing their "homework" in order to set the hook.

Another one to be careful of is if you get a call from someone asking to "confirm your free listing" with their online business directory or off-brand phone book.

They may use copy and paste with your voice to get you saying "yes" to some innocuous question but pasting it after, "do you agree to the annual fee of $745 to be in our directory" and then sic a collection agency after you when you don't pay. If you get such a call say something along the lines of "I am recording this call for quality assurance purposes, I have no idea who you are, please don't call back"-then hang up.

One downside of "getting your name out there" is that it makes it easy for the scammers to find you too.

Your welcome James. I thought this scam attempt was particularly noteworthy because the initial pitch could easily grab someone's attention and bypass their BS detector. Clearly they thought this one out carefully and figured which button to push. especially in a down economy.
