Tonight I went and saw a Stage hypnosis show at an amusement park I went to visit. Since I have begun studying hypnosis after having had the experiences I had with it... I found it very entertaining. I was very curious to see his induction and suggestability tests. Moreso It was great seeing the reactions of those that were hypnotized. I did wonder however why he did not do more of an instant induction on the subjects... Well anyway I know this is short but that was pretty cool to me. He gave alot of fun suggestions that were enjoyable both to the subjects as well as the audiance. It was definately different to the therapies I have seen as well as some of the fun little suggestions my hypnotist has left with me.

Shaun...
He was good. I think I was most impressed when he actually eliminated half of the subjects.. even some that I thought were good subjects (Granted I was sitting in the back.) so that showed me that he was honest in his ways and did get rid of the fakers. Also though.. I am intrigued by most every aspect of hypnosis right now.. lol so I guess that was a help too. Thank you for letting me know your perspective as well on the induction. I think I am really understanding now why he used the one he did.

Hi Karena, I don't use instant inductions or rapid inductions on stage because it looks fake to the audience. I use a pretty quick authoritative induction because it works, it doesn't look fake and when I give suggestions like being stuck to a chair or something, they will continue to follow if I started out authoritative vs permissive.
I like Hugh's comment about doing one to set the tone, I may try that but I like to kick off fakers and keep it as clean and positive as possible! I too am glad that you haven't got a bad taste in your mouth, the hypnotist must have done a good job!!!

Also check out Sean Michael Andrew's videos on rapid induction. Between the Nongard/Cerbone videos and SMA's you'll get about all the info you need on rapids.

Thank you! that is greatly appreciated, I should have realized about the fractionization as that is what I use when I have tized my subjects.... part of the elman induction.

Hi Karena
That's a pretty standard progressive relaxation induction at least it sounds like it was. The rest of what he did is called fractionation. He induces trance several times to be sure they are deep enough. Hot and cold are normally the first phenomena you produce in stage hypnosis as they are the easist.to produce. The important thing is that you had a very positive experience. As James pointed out there is a lot that a good clinical Hypnotist can learn from Stage Techniques. A good hypnotist is equally comfortable doing a public demonatration as he is in a clinical setting. Glad to have you here on Hypnothoughts.
Some Stage Hypnotists are not as comfortable with rapid inductions as others are. But that's alright, It's just the way they do a show. I personally find them essential to a great show, but that'a just me. There are some great resources available to learn Rapid inductions. Check out Richard Nongard and Brian David Phillips for some great DVD's. Of course you can ask me whatever you would like.and I will be as helpful as I can.

oh For me... It was awesome. I find stage hypnotism to be just as good as therapy. After all one does need to relax and just have fun sometimes. Hugh...I'll post this to you as well as here in my comments. He started with a few suggestability tests... magnets in the hands then gluing them together. He then took them to a relaxed state and had them invision a hammock swinging back and forth... deepened it. Then he added the sleep command, he woke them talked about the weather getting hot and cold and with their hands stuck to their thigh... then fired off the sleep command again... and went through the rest of his show and suggestions.

It's good to see that your mind hasn't been poisoned against stage hypnosis. Therapeutic hypnotists tend to fall into two camps: those who condemn stage hypnosis and those who recognize its value. (You can probably guess I'm in the second group.) There's a lot that clinical hypnotists can learn from good stage hypnotists.
