 In a recent journal on clinical nutrition  (Pub Med cite ) the researchers concluded that

 

“MSG consumption was positively, longitudinally associated with overweight development among apparently healthy Chinese adults. Additional studies are needed to elucidate mechanisms of action and to establish causal inference.”

 

WTF?  ,,, Chubby Chinese in China ? That’s only supposed to happen when they eat American style!  Or is it? … Can you say “processed foods” boys and girls?  Just one more reason to start eating healthy and cooking it yourself! Monosodium Glutamate is everywhere including those cleverly disguised “No added MSG” places in chinese resturants. (It has so many other names only google knows for sure)

 

After analyzing MSG intake and weight gain among more than 10,000 Chinese adults, researchers found that those who ate the most MSG (about 5 grams a day) were about 30 percent more likely to become overweight than those who ate the least (less than a half-gram a day).

 

The researchers theorized that the hormone leptin may be involved in the weight gain, as those who consumed more MSG also produced more leptin. (Duh!) They noted that MSG consumption could cause leptin resistance. The way your body stores fat is a highly regulated process that is controlled, primarily, by leptin. If you gain excess weight, the extra fat produces extra leptin that should alert your brain that your body is storing too much fat and needs to not only stop storing anymore, but also burn off the excess.

 

To do this, signals are sent to your brain to stop being hungry and to stop eating.

 

It is very important that your brain is able to accurately "hear" the messages leptin sends it, as otherwise you will continue to feel hungry and will likely continue to eat and store more fat. (Can you think of a reson that is a good thing for folks selling you food?)  Leptin resistance occurs when your body is unable to properly hear leptin's signals, which means your body can no longer hear the messages telling it to stop eating and burn fat -- so it remains hungry and stores more fat.

 

MSG  is an excititoxin designed to stimulate and enhance your “taste experience”.  It does however much more including making the brain tone deaf to the leptin symphony in your gut.    More to come in a future blog post!

And those are just ,, pseudo-names ,,  There are a whole lot of other processing additives, with remaining amounts of MSG in them. (I like textured protein, you could get road kill textured by a tire and call it textured protein.)  You could add soylent green to that list and nobody would ask what it was.

EXCITITOXIN? It sounds like the name of a death metal band! It is really hard to avoid MSG as it is so prevalent. Here is a list I found of some of its pseudonyms.

A good read (and one that greatly improved the health of my wife and myself - neither of us overweight or out of shape to begin with) is The Paleo Diet by Robb Wolf. 

 

He goes into a lot of detail about specific reactions proteins, gluten, HFCS, etc and how it affects most people's digestive system.

 

My wife and I lost 20 lbs and noticed a significant increase in energy and overall health in just a few months with just a diet change. 

 

All the various blood tests he suggests in the book (HDL/LDL, triglycerides, etc) improved significantly as well after 1 month eating as he suggests in the book.

 

It may not be your cup of tea, but it worked for us. Plus, it's delicious :)

Good explanation in article, Hugh. As a kid, I remember always being hungry after eating Chinese food. Then we eventually learned to request the food without MSG. For years since, many of us knew what to do, now we can say why.
