SO I have been having quite the discussion on another topic however what amount of training do you as industry professionals feel is necessary to practice hypnosis?

Either Hypnotherapy or stage Hypnosis?

Should we have a best practices policy as an industry?

Thanks...

Justin James

LOl... Yes I do like it large and splashy.... However You will not find me selling products on this forum and if I were to I would buy an ad and sell it through there... I am grateful that Scott built this wonderful forum to allow industry people to discuss material and share ideas and opinions and although I respect what you do I certainly would not want to see you attempting to sell me membership to your site at every turn... That would be a turn off...

and I assume you have noted how many attempts to sell my stuff I have made. NONE! I think what I do intrigues people but scares them at the same time.

But I actually don't mind people selling their wares. its what they do. I just read whats of interest to me. Heck I even buy stuff.

In fairness to your topic it seems pretty broad so I am not sure what response you will get.

Now go to my post and start laying out those safety concerns.. I want to build a detailed list for everyone to understand and respond to.

In my opinion, learning to put someone in a trance takes less than an hour. It's what comes afterwards that makes a difference:)

Just as in everything else, it really depends on the person, the trainer and instruction given. That's why it is so hard to pin down what is NECESSARY to practice hypnosis. And another reason why most states haven't touched regulation yet. They don't know.

I remember Elman was against weekend courses if that was all that was required or needed to be a good hypnotist or hypnotherapist. He had been doing it for over 30 years when he wrote his wonderful book and still had much to learn (he said so).

This is why we have certifying organizations who for the most part know what they are doing. There are test requirements to pass before being certified. Who am I to judge if a person can practice within a couple days or weeks versus someone who were to take 4 years worth of training? If they do well on their examinations, I see no point to clarify the parameters on the amount or length of training.

I'm a recent grad, so take my opinion for what it's worth :)

Peace...

I think the key to being successful with clients is education. I have been a hypnotherapist since 1989. I took all the training that was available at the time -- 200 hours -- and graduated as a clinical hypnotherapist. Now, the American Council of Hypnotist Examiners requires 200 hours to qualify as a hypnotherapist and 300 hours for the title clinical hypnotherapist.

Can someone with a weekend of training be as competant as someone with several hundred hours? I honestly don't think they can. I have trained students who are also licensed counselors. While they are licensed to give advice and have a master's degree, initially they still don't know what to do with a client in hypnosis. I've also had numerous clients over the years who have been to a psychologist who did a little hypnosis and from their reports, didn't understand it's power or use it well. Licensed professionals only need 20 hours of training to qualify for their certifying organization.

Also, the more comprehensive our education, the more we will be accepted by the medical and psychological community. I, for one, would like to work with them. I see the need for it all. For example, when I have surgery I use hypnosis to eliminate pain and accelerate healing but I still need the surgery.

As for stage hypnosis, I still think that a minimum education of 200 hours and a few years in private practice is necessary to handle what may come up. You just never know how people will respond when they are formally hypnotized. I've seen it many times in 19 years of group work. Thank goodness I was well trained and know how to handle an abreaction.

Dr. Conrad Adams, founder of Alpha University, is working to standardize the education required to practice. I think it is needed in a profession where too many people are only taught basic hypnosis and how to read/write a script.

That's probably enough for this early in the morning. This is what happens when I injure myself and have to skip my morning walk!
