Here's one way:
Ask someone for directions, then ask them for their wallet, house keys etc.

Repeat this a couple of hundred times with different people until someone does exactly as you tell them.
Having filmed all of these, edit out the failed attempts and broadcast the attempt that worked.

Derren Brown is amazing! Keep in mind though that he is also an entertainer and just because he can get one person to hand over his wallet does'nt mean he can get everyone too. I that particular episode you can see him using various NLP techniques to bait and hook his sumnambulist "victim". He uses matching and mirroing as he asks the man where to go. You can see him checking to see at all times if the man is in rapport with him or not. He speaks fast and acts fast overloading the man and does an ericksonian handshake induction and anchors it with a water bottle. He quickly takes advantage of this short trance and asks him to hand over everything. You can see when the man comes back he uses the water bottle again to re induce trance and the man hands it all over again. The handshake induction he uses is called a pattern interrupt (he is a master at these) basically you take an automatic behavior like a handshake and interrupt it (he grabs the hand in an unusual way) this leaves the victim in a small but potent trance as their pattern has been broken and they are highly succeptable to suggestion.

Ankit. Only Derren Brown could tell you the exact working.

He really is very skilled at this kind of thing but it's his unique set of interests and obsessive reading on these (magic, hypnosis, psychology) which has enabled him to develop and perform stunts like this.

Everyone (including me) will tell you that it's definitely possible in theory, but finding someone other than Derren Brown to demonstrate it to you ... ?
Even though my first post was very tongue-in-cheek, there's also a lot of truth in it.
I don't post videos of the times I fail to induce trance on the street, just the successes.

I doubt you'll learn much about "covert" hypnosis to your satisfaction on these forums.
By studying hypnosis you could learn about the power of a pattern interrupt and suggestion and once you've mastered hypnosis, you might find original ways of incorporating it into your mentalism. But only "might."

Luke Jermay, Kenton Knepper, Derren himself and a few others have produced some interesting books on the subject of suggestion in magic and I suggest you start there.
There's also a lot of interesting material out there on impromptu/street hypnosis. Look up Anthony Jacquin (who is also on this site) and Igor Ledochowski.

I'm also keen on mentalism and have recently begun to find ways of combining magic and suggestion/hypnosis. It's a really interesting field, but I put my own spin on it because I don't want to be seen as a Derren Brown copycat/wannabe!

Also beware that DB is often fooling us, the viewers, (magicians, hypnotists and psychologists included) as well as the people he appears to be fooling on screen.

Often he induces trance as a form of misdirection, to make us think the trance state is involved in the magic somehow. But that's not always the case.

Good luck in your search, but unlike a lot of commercially available illusions, you won't find a word-for-word explanation.

are you in the field of psychological illusion . thank u very much for ur guidance

I'm mainly a hypnotist, but I also have an interest in all forms of magic especially mentalism. I often help write and devise tricks for magicians and I'm thinking about including some psychological illusions in a stage show soon.

Ankit-
This is a very advanced technique that requires great understanding of components before the explanation would be useful to you at all. If you need steps, they won't help. Even if someone were to break it down into steps for you, to give those steps a useful context would require books of informaiton (like the books suggested in an earlier reply).

Once you understand how to fractionate someone into a waking trance state you are getting started. The explanation of that, like I said, is a considerable amount of information. Much of that information is a subjetive understanding that requires years of effort and insight.

Think of it this way: How many people have seen the clip you are refering to? Don't you think more people would be doing it if it was as easy as he made it look?

If you want to become a very talented hypnotist you can probably learn how to do that trick. If your goal is to add a very exciting routine to a mentalism show, I think you should focus your efforts on a different phenomenon.

Hope this helps,
Scott Sandland
