Does every give a cd out to their smoking clients?
And what do you like to do on their final session?
I, for instance use Cal Banyans's High Road to Success Induction ?
What are your thoughts / comments ?

Hello Kenda,

My clients usually never come back for last session, they quit in the first or second, then I don't hear from them... I always recommend coming back for reinforcement... but they don't...
What I usually do, I use relaxation and remind them how good it feels to be free from the habit of smoking.
I give a CD on the first or second session.
It really depends if I feel they need it or not.

Thank you Doreen. This is what happens with Richards clients too. I use the Elman, think I will switch over to a PMR.

Kind regards,

Kenda.

I do three sessions....

Session ONE: They leave a non-smoker (actually as if they have never smoked in the first place). I give them a CD (a pre-recorded CD, not one of the actual session) and my suggestion is that they will listen to it each day for 21 days.

Session TWO: I schedule for 1-3 days later depending on schedule. 9 times out of ten they show up for this session to share the joys of succeess, and usually it is positive reinforcement. If by chance they smoked or had a hard time we deal with that, find a solution, and in this sesion the become a non smoker (but this is less than 10% of my smokers).

Session THREE: I tell them they can use it anytime in the next 90 days for any reason. I DO NOT give them the negative suggestion "in case they relapse", and I do tell them most never show up because they don't need it, or that if they do they usually use it to learn more skills or to being work on something else. Smokers rarely ever come back for this one, unless weight loss is an issue, then they tend to take advantage of it a month or two later but I also deal with that in the first session and second....

FYI: My first session is typically one hour including assessment and session.
Second session I usually do 30 minutes....

I really put all my eggs into the basket of the first session, believing this is both the first and the last most of them need...

I base my induction on the individuals learning style. And I tend to use PMR with breathwork, becasue this is what smokers use cigarettes for anyway... great learning tool

Okay, I know it's a digression, but if you'd share it with us, what is your method during that first session, Richard? I don't have a lot of experience with smoking cessation, and it sounds like you've got it down pat. :-)

In the first session I do assessment as to why they smoke (Phsycial, emotional, spiritual, psychological) Find out where they have had success in the past trying to quit, usually do PMR with breathwork to teach that skill, an anchor to bring them back at anypoint in the futue to this state of calm, age regression coupled with future progression, direct suggestion related to assessment, and anchor to the color red success and empowerment... I then congrat them, make an appointment fo rhte next day or two and bingo, anothe nonsmoker
