So based on what I am learning as I read here. Is it really faux pas to conduct a session for a client and read from a script. Is this something you should break away from ?
My general worry is that I wont talk long enough, and the session wont have all the info in it that it should contain and therefore lack the impact ?

Thought / Comments ?

Kenda.

Trancework, by Michael Yapko, and My Voice Will Go With You, by Sydney Rosen. I've read both as well, and agree that they are excellent and highly recommended.

Having written from what I've been told, a top selling Script Book, I am a bit biased.
But I will tell you, your script is only as good as the clinician witting it.
One of the reasons I wrote and published my book, was I felt as you did, other session scripts were too short and spread out over a page in large font, triple spaced, or in some cases, written in negative language, or old stuff. I got tired of the struggle and published. The scripts I wrote have been carefully writtren, up to date and proven to work, so they are successfully field tested.
I also thought it to be of value to keep records, so by using my script I'd have a record of what I did. Many of us are still shooting from the hip, no records of what we did, words and ideas off the top of our heads, great if ever involved with a court case huh?
Most clinicians who use my stuff had told me they either read it verbatim, and / or add to it, or adapt it and add to the script as needed. Why the 2nd guessing?
Just my view on your post, others mileage might vary.

And I do just that Patricia. Adapt a script to an individual client - so it suits their sceniro.
I have always envied the people though that say - oh I never use scripts.
I just wonder how they know everything that they have to say to get the results they need.

Hello Kenda,
The way I always have a personalized set of suggestions is to have the client write down (before they come) at least seven ways in which their life will have changed for the better once they have made the change they want (what are they doing, feeling etc.). I discuss these with them in the first session to clarify etc. You then have in your hand the essentials of the the personalized "script" to use for the direct suggestion part of your session. You could also use it adapt a pre-prepared script if you still don't feel comfortable yet going on your own.
The next biggest thing about using a script, after making sure it applies to the individual you are working with, is to use emotion in its delivery. You have to bring out the actor in yourself. The SC mind responds to emotion, put real feeling into what you are suggesting; no room for feeling self-conscious about this.
After this you need to read (and put into practice) Gerry Kein's advice on using direct drive and compounding techniques to really make scripts effective.
Hope this helps,
Stephen
