I have just started my business and was wondering what each of you do to continue your education in the hypnosis field? Do you go to seminars, take advanced hypnosis classes, etc? Where do you get the up-to-date information to stay on top of the changes being made in our field?
Also, what type of association(s) are you members of and how often do you renew your memberships? I automatically recieved a membership to the IMDHA when I was certified and am aware that I must have 30 education hours each year for renewal.
I am just trying to plan what I will be doing to meet these requirements and see if there are any other associations (NGH etc..) that I may want to join.
Thanks for your input.

Katherine:
The NGH convention (8-10 August) offers a wealth of information. You get to choose from over two hundred different seminars so I really recommend it! Friends told me that the IMDHA convention this year was outstanding too.

I studied with many of the "big names" and that laid the foundation for me. Nowadays I continue to take classes, but I also go out and meet as many other hypnotists as I can. Most hypnotists are more than willing to consult and share information. Call some local hypnotists and schedule a one-on-one chat. I have never met another hypnotist who didn't have at least one really cool nugget of information to share.

Hi Katherine,

I have been a full time hypnotist for over twenty five years and have belonged to many, if not all organizations. I would say to start by belonging to as many as possible and then at the end of your membership (usual a year) evaluate what you have received from the organization and then continue membership in the one organization that has helped you the most. The majority of the hypnotist I know are members of the NGH.

You asked how we continue our hypnosis education and then you answered the question for yourself. At the NGH Convention next month I will present three workshops and be the headliner entertainer with my Don Rice & His Parade of Stars Comedy Hypnosis Show. However, to learn I will also talk to as many professionals as possible and attend at least twenty seminars.

If IMDHA needs you to have 30 hours I should contact them and ask how to acquire those hours. Different organizations have different standards.

Good luck and if I can every help just ask,

Don

I believe that attending any professional organization conference is a great way to get an overview of techniques you want to learn more about. I have been a speaker at all the major conferences for the past 10 years and find them very enlightening. With that said, however, as a speaker you get 50 minutes or possibly 3 hours to lecture and demonstrate your techniques and theories. There is absolutely no way you can cram a full day's training or a 3 day training into one hour or three hours. All you can do is hit the high spots and hope you have given the audience enough to let them know whether your training program is one they want to learn or not. Those that are interested can then purchase your training program or book or attend your training classes when you teach them. So, conferences are a great way to get an overview, just don't expect depth in any area. To get depth you will have to attend training workshops and classes or read, read, read. Both ways have merit.

Hi Katherine,

The best way is to attend conventions. I've been a hypnotherapist since 1988. When you go to hypnosis conventions and conferences, you get a huge savings in travel because there are so many amazing teachers in one spot. I encourage you to go to them as you can afford them.

Melissa Roth once told me that I'll learn more from my clients than I will from other hypnotists. :-)

That said, read as much as you can, go to as many seminars as you can manage, and never pass up a chance to practice with fellow hypnotists.
